Marks Life Co., Ltd., headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, is set to open a new branch in Kumamoto on August 1, 2025. This expansion aims to tackle the ongoing issues tied to increasing numbers of empty houses and the isolation of the elderly living alone, which have become pressing social challenges in the region. With this new addition, Marks Life will have 16 branches nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to community support.
Background of the Expansion
Japan's aging population is a growing concern, and Kumamoto Prefecture is experiencing it acutely, with a reported elderly population rate of 32.3%. This alarming statistic indicates that nearly one in three residents is aged 65 or older. Furthermore, households with individuals over 65 make up about 47.5% of all households, with more than half of these households consisting of either single elderly individuals or elderly couples living alone.
These trends highlight a serious issue: only 3.2% of elderly residents live with children, while 37.6% live at least an hour away from them. This growing distance fosters isolation among seniors, complicating their access to necessary support and healthcare, leading to severe risks, including the potential for solitary deaths.
