Having spent over 20 years in diverse leadership positions, Butera's most recent role was President of Pulmonary Hypertension and Retina at Johnson & Johnson. His tenure there was marked by significant growth in a multi-billion-dollar business unit and the successful launch of OPSYNVI®, which combines the drugs macitentan and tadalafil. His leadership experience extends further back to his role as Worldwide Vice President for Infectious Diseases and Vaccines at Johnson & Johnson, where he played a pivotal role in launching COVID vaccines, reflecting his ability to strategize and execute in various therapeutic segments.
Before his impactful years at Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Butera held senior roles at Novartis, including Global Head of Cell and Gene Therapies. His key achievement there was leading the launch of KYMRIAH®, the first CAR-T therapy, marking a significant milestone in cancer treatment. With earlier roles that include experiences at McKinsey & Company and Goldman Sachs, Butera's multifaceted background encompasses strategy, finance, and global health, positioning him well for his new responsibilities at Insmed. He holds a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science in International Economics from Università Bocconi in Milan, Italy.
Reflecting on his new role, Mr. Butera stated, “I am incredibly excited to join Insmed and lead the Respiratory Therapeutic Area at such a defining moment for the Company. Insmed has built a respiratory portfolio and pipeline that have the potential to meaningfully change the lives of patients.” He aims to not only advance the successful launch of BRINSUPRI but also to explore opportunities for the growth of ARIKAYCE through label expansion and continue the development of other promising candidates for those who need them most.
