Calling All High School Students to Join the Innovative Ocean Rakugo Program!

Engaging Young Minds: Ocean Rakugo Program for High School Students

In a unique blend of Japan's traditional storytelling art, rakugo, and environmental awareness, the Ocean Rakugo Program is opening its doors to high school students across the nation. Organized by the Japan Foundation as part of the "Sea and Japan" project, this innovative program encourages creativity while addressing crucial marine issues. Applications are now open for students keen to express their thoughts and actions regarding ocean challenges through the captivating medium of rakugo.

Program Overview

The Ocean Rakugo Project combines the humor and engagement of traditional rakugo performances with insights from environmental experts. Participants will work collaboratively in teams under the guidance of professional rakugo performers and marine scientists. The main goal is to empower students to understand and communicate marine issues, fostering both awareness and action.

The program is divided into two courses:
1. Rakugo High School Course: 5 students will create and perform original rakugo pieces related to ocean issues.
2. Marine High School Course: 5 students will research and present findings on various marine problems.

Both teams will form five collaborative groups, each consisting of one student from the Rakugo High School course, one from the Marine High School course, and a professional rakugo performer. The students will tackle a common theme related to ocean challenges, fostering synergy between storytelling and factual research.

Timeline of Events

The program is scheduled to run from June to November 2025, with key phases including:
  • - June 2025: Orientation and initial lectures on marine topics, where participants will be divided into teams and collaboratively decide on their themes.
  • - July to August 2025: Students will begin the creation and research phase, receiving guidance from their mentors to refine their performances and presentations.
  • - August to October 2025: Practice sessions and preparation for the final presentations, where students will refine their works with expert feedback.
  • - October 2025: A mid-term presentation event to share progress.
  • - November 2025: The final showcase, where completed rakugo performances and research presentations will be evaluated by professionals, culminating in the recognition of the best team.
