Celebrating Safety Leaders: Winners of the 2025 Green Cross Awards Announced

NSC Honors Exemplary Leaders in Safety

On September 16, 2025, the National Safety Council (NSC) proudly announced the winners of the prestigious 2025 Green Cross for Safety® awards during the 26th annual Green Cross Celebration, generously sponsored by U.S. Steel. This event was a tribute to the tireless efforts and commitments of individuals and organizations dedicated to enhancing safety in the workplace and community.

Recognizing Safety Advocacy

In the category of Safety Advocate, sponsored by First Student, NSC recognized Amazon for its groundbreaking initiatives amidst the national opioid crisis. By equipping over 1,200 North American facilities with naloxone, Amazon is taking significant strides to safeguard its workforce. This initiative not only highlights Amazon's commitment to emergency preparedness but has also set a standard for other corporations, urging them to adopt similar measures. Their proactive stance was demonstrated through appearances at key events, including the White House's Save Lives from Overdose Challenge.

Emergent BioSolutions was also acknowledged for its innovative campaign to increase the accessibility of NARCAN® Nasal Spray across various sectors. Their Ready to Rescue initiative aimed to equip workplaces with critical opioid emergency kits, normalizing the presence of life-saving medications just like any other essential supplies. Emergent's efforts directly contribute to combating the escalating opioid crisis and ensuring safer environments for employees everywhere.

Commending Safety Excellence

The Safety Excellence award, sponsored by Amazon, highlighted the outstanding contributions of organizations that prioritize safety as a core value. The NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services stood out for its comprehensive New York City Safe Fleet Transition Plan. This ambitious initiative aims to implement best practices in vehicle safety across the city's extensive fleet, which operates more than 28,500 vehicles. Their commitment to reducing traffic-related incidents reflects a proactive approach to public safety grounded in innovative technologies like Intelligent Speed Assistance and sideguards, significantly enhancing the protection of both drivers and pedestrians.

Celebrating Safety Innovation

In the Safety Innovation category, awarded by Centuri, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) emerged as a leader in harnessing technology for safety. They adopted infrared camera technology to monitor wind turbine operations remotely, allowing them to identify potential electrical problems from a safe distance. This advancement minimizes risks associated with manual inspections and promotes a shift toward condition-based maintenance—a crucial step in enhancing operational safety and efficiency in the energy sector.

A Community of Safety Advocates

This year's Green Cross Celebration raised over $788,000 to further promote workplace safety and well-being, showing the community's dedication to fostering a culture that values safety. Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO, emphasized the impact these award recipients have on making workplaces and communities safer, asserting, "The impact of their work is far-reaching — protecting our workplaces and communities today and shaping a safer tomorrow."

The Green Cross for Safety® awards not only recognize these commendable leaders but also inspire a movement toward enhanced safety practices throughout various industries. As we progress, the initiatives led by Amazon, Emergent BioSolutions, NYC DCAS, and Puget Sound Energy set a powerful precedent for others to follow.
