A Taste of Nostalgia: Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt Experience at Osaka
The Osaka Expo is set to host a unique event where visitors can indulge in a nostalgic experience paired with a refreshing discovery. On
August 7th and 8th, attendees will have the opportunity to taste the original recipe of
Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt, rekindling the flavor from when it was first launched in
1973. This event allows participants to compare the classic taste with contemporary yogurt, providing a fascinating glimpse into the
50 years of evolution that this beloved product has undergone.
A Sweet Journey Through Time
Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt was inspired by the
1970 Osaka Expo, and it officially debuted three years later. Celebrating its
50th anniversary in 2023, this yogurt has evolved into a staple, thanks in part to its use of
LB81 lactic acid bacteria from Bulgaria and high-quality domestically-sourced milk. The signature production technique, known as
“rich and smooth fermentation,” enhances the yogurt’s delightful texture and taste.
The event will recreate the original yogurt flavor, allowing consumers to reflect on how far yogurt has come over the years. It’s a rare chance to experience the foundation of yogurt culture in Japan while savoring its modern-day counterpart.
The Origins of Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt
The journey of Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt began at the
Bulgaria Pavilion during the
1970 Osaka Expo. Employees of Meiji tasted authentic plain yogurt and recognized a gap in the Japanese market – where similar products were predominantly sweetened desserts thickened with agar or gelatin. This experience sparked a mission to introduce authentic plain yogurt to Japan.
In 1971, after extensive research and multiple trips to Europe, Meiji launched the predecessor to their famed yogurt,
Meiji Plain Yogurt. Initially met with skepticism and negativity from consumers accustomed to sweeter varieties, the brand persevered. Despite challenges, including misunderstandings about the product's taste, faith in their vision helped them succeed. The yogurt garnered recognition, and by December 1973, it was officially renamed
Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt after gaining permission to use the Bulgaria brand name. This pivotal moment allowed for extensive marketing efforts, including TV campaigns, promotional events, and taste tests, gradually leading to increased sales.
Advancements Over 50 Years
Since its launch,
Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt has continuously improved its value and taste. The yogurt is now marketed as a
Food for Specified Health Use, with claims of maintaining intestinal balance and promoting digestive health due to LB81 bacteria. Advances in production techniques, particularly
rich and smooth fermentation, have elevated its creaminess, richness, and overall mouthfeel.
Today, it stands not only as a delicious snack but also as a product that contributes to healthier diets. The innovative open-container design introduced in 1981 further transformed the consumption experience, cementing its place on Japanese dining tables and establishing new yogurt-eating habits among consumers.
Looking forward,
Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt plans to uphold its tradition of quality while embracing evolution in flavors and formulations. As it reaches its milestone, the brand commits to expanding delicious and enjoyable experiences for its customers, continuing its mission of supporting healthful living.
