CIGRE 2026: Building Electrical Networks for a New Era of Electrification
The world is on the cusp of a significant transformation, entering a new era defined by electrification. The challenge isn't just to envision a future network; it's about constructing it promptly and on a massive scale. The key takeaway from the CIGRE 2026 Paris session, attended by over 15,000 experts and 330 exhibitors from 100 countries, was this urgency.
A Growing Imperative for Electric Networks
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the electrification of various sectors—transport, industry, and buildings, combined with the integration of renewable energy sources and the sharp rise in data center demands—has pushed electrical systems to their limits. To keep pace with these burgeoning needs, it's projected that annual investments in electrical networks need to surge from approximately $400 billion to $600 billion by 2030.
However, timelines for project delivery present a major hurdle. In China, constructing a high-voltage line can take about 1.5 years, while in India it's around 3 years. Conversely, similar initiatives in Europe and the United States can take eight years or longer. This disparity highlights the urgent need for streamlined processes in the deployment of electrical infrastructure.
A Unified Network for Energy Transition
The success of this energy transition hinges on how the future electrical grid is developed, operated, and managed as an integrated system. This “single grid” approach necessitates coordination among all stakeholders from the initial stages of infrastructure planning and execution.

The Importance of Skilled Labor
Infrastructure and capital alone are insufficient; there’s an escalating shortage of skilled personnel. The demand for engineers, technicians, and digital specialists is intensifying, making it crucial to attract and train qualified individuals for timely electrification. Currently, around eight million personnel are involved in constructing, maintaining, and operating electrical networks; however, the IEA anticipates that an additional 1.5 million workers will be needed by 2030 to keep up with the pace of development.
CIGRE is actively tackling this issue through its technical working groups and the CIGRE Innovation and Education Fund, which supports research, scholarships, and training initiatives worldwide.

At the CIGRE 2026 event, the French Minister of Industry, Martin, visited the exhibition, highlighting the critical role of collaboration in addressing the current electrification wave. The minister pointed out that the first CIGRE conference was held in Paris back in 1921. Today, more than a century later, CIGRE continues to unite the entire electrical community to collectively tackle common social, industrial, and environmental challenges.
