Experience the Depths of the Ocean: Olafur Eliasson at ARTIS Aquarium

A Deep-Sea Experience at the ARTIS Aquarium

As the ARTIS Aquarium in Amsterdam prepares to unveil its latest installation, renowned artist Olafur Eliasson promises a captivating journey that delves into the mysteries of the deep sea. Scheduled to launch later this fall, the installation, titled Deep Seeing Currents, aims to immerse visitors in an evocative, multi-sensory exploration of marine depths—an adventure that offers a rare glimpse into a world most have never experienced firsthand.

Eliasson’s creation harnesses the power of sound, light, and tactile sensations to transport visitors into underwater environments. In the artist’s own words, ‘As one approaches Deep Seeing Currents, they slowly become enveloped by darkness and sounds of marine life—a symphony of oceanic cacophony dominated by whale songs, the rumblings of hydrothermal vents, and artificial noises imparting a feeling of underwater presence.’ This ambiance is designed to resonate throughout the body, mimicking the pressure felt within deep-sea environments.

The experience is amplified by flashing lights that appear to descend like the mesmerizing flow of marine snow—tiny organic and inorganic particles essential for life in those depths. Eliasson believes that restricting one sense can enhance the others, unlocking deeper perceptions vital for evoking the imaginative scope of this alien realm.

Merging Art, Science, and Nature

With this installation, ARTIS seeks to merge art, science, and nature, providing an interactive platform for understanding the interconnectedness of all life. Through this rich sensory engagement, Deep Seeing Currents renders the otherwise foreign aquatic environment palpably tangible within the aquarium's central rotunda. The installation enhances the fundamental principles embodied by the new ARTIS Aquarium—how everything on Earth is linked to water, from the vast ocean depths to everyday life on land.

The ARTIS Aquarium, a national heritage site dating back to 1882, has undergone extensive restoration and is set to reopen to the public in June 2026. However, Eliasson’s installation will be available for exploration starting October 3, 2026. Beyond a mere aquatic exhibit, the aquarium aspires to serve as a museum combining architecture, installations, science, and art. The new aquarium transforms what is one of the oldest facilities of its kind into a vibrant contemporary cultural experience.

In the wake of Eliasson's installation, visitors will be invited to explore a new dimension where wonder, experiential learning, and ecological urgency converge. This multifaceted approach not only presents aquatic life but also narrates a broader story about the profound relationships between humans, water, and nature. Supported in part by the Mondrian Fund, Eliasson’s installation is set to become a pivotal piece of the ARTIS Aquarium, promoting both education and environmental urgency within its artistic framework.

With the aim of enhancing public perception of the marine world, Eliasson’s work promises to redefine how audiences interact with and regard the ocean’s depths. The installation makes clear that creativity and ecological awareness can forge a kaleidoscopic experience of art as a medium for understanding the planet’s vital lifelines. ARTIS looks forward to welcoming visitors into this beautiful union of sensory exploration and ecological awareness as they step into Eliasson’s profound invitation to engage with the deep sea.
