CALDERA's First Solo Exhibition at CIBONE CASE
From May 23rd to June 7th, 2026, the CIBONE CASE in Ginza will host the debut solo exhibition of the woodworking unit CALDERA, based in Kobe, Japan. This exhibition marks a significant milestone for the artisans, who have dedicated their craft to creating unique wooden pieces that celebrate the natural qualities of their materials.
Located in a historic shopping district, CALDERA operates from a repurposed boutique, allowing them to blend tradition with modern art. They meticulously gather natural materials, including leftover timber and bark, emphasizing the character of the wood in every piece they create. Using minimal tools such as hand saws and circular saws, their craftsmanship shines through, producing one-of-a-kind creations that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The Art of Framing
One of CALDERA's primary focuses in recent years has been the creation of custom frames that extend beyond conventional sizes and shapes. Traditionally, frames are meant to house artworks; however, CALDERA redefines this relationship, transforming the frame into a new medium that conveys deeper meanings. By bridging the worlds of art, furniture, and personal artifacts, CALDERA encourages viewers to explore their individuality and the diverse expressions that can emerge through their work.
Available for sale are unique frames, priced from ¥27,500 to ¥36,300. These distinctive frames do not merely serve as boundaries; instead, they invite us to reconsider the significance of what is displayed within them.
A New Perspective on Everyday Objects
CALDERA's exhibition features 40 unique pieces, each designed to hold something personal. Whether it’s cherished travel souvenirs, everyday tools, or natural specimens, these frames shift our perceptions of ordinary objects, giving them newfound significance.
The exhibition effectively merges art and daily life, highlighting the idea that value doesn’t solely stem from expensive artworks. Instead, it invites the audience to appreciate the beauty in the mundane, rekindling the memories and stories tied to these everyday items. Through this flattery of common objects, viewers will find themselves greeted by fresh perspectives on their own lives.
The Philosophy of CALDERA
The name CALDERA is derived from geological formations created by volcanic eruptions, symbolizing transformation and the emergence of new ecosystems. This philosophy resonates deeply with their approach to woodworking—embracing nature's inherent qualities while pursuing imaginative creations that challenge the status quo.
The exhibit at CIBONE CASE encourages attendees to enjoy a unique visual experience by framing what they find intriguing and valuable in their lives. Through this artistic lens, CALDERA revitalizes personal memories and highlights the extraordinary potential within everyday simplicity.
