Grapes for Humanity Gala Raises Over $200,000 for POLG Foundation

Grapes for Humanity Gala: A Night of Wine and Philanthropy

The Grapes for Humanity Global Foundation recently hosted its seventh annual Wine Legends Dinner in New York City, achieving remarkable success by raising over $200,000 in net proceeds for The POLG Foundation. The event, which took place on October 21 at the esteemed Harmonie Club, was sold out, attracting a crowd of leading wine producers, collectors, and philanthropic supporters eager to contribute to a worthy cause.

Chaired by Prince Robert and Princess Julie of Luxembourg, the event had a personal significance for the royal couple, as they championed the cause following the heartbreaking loss of their son Frederik to a POLG-related mitochondrial disease in March 2025. In his remarks during the gala, Prince Robert expressed the couple's dedication to advancing research for effective treatments and a potential cure, emphasizing the urgency and importance of their mission.

A Celebration of Exceptional Wine

The evening was not only a fundraiser but also a celebration of fine wines, with contributions from distinguished wine estates worldwide. Attendees savored exquisite selections from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the United States, all beautifully paired with a gourmet menu designed by Executive Chef Sherwin Charles. The presence of respected wine figures, such as Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson, reflected the event’s high caliber.

One of the highlights of the night was an auction featuring rare wines, including a coveted collection from Domaine Clarence Dillon. The pinnacle of the auction was the sale of a bottle of Château Haut-Brion, commanding an impressive $90,000. The auction was skillfully conducted by Guy Rigby, who ensured the evening maintained its lively and engaging atmosphere while supporting a noble cause.

An Urgent Call to Action

In a heartfelt address, Prince Robert emphasized the emotional journey his family has undergone since Frederik’s passing. He noted, “We have sought to transform our deep sadness into strengthened resolve... What was given tonight brings that cure measurably closer.”

Arlene Willis, Founder and Chairman of the Grapes for Humanity Global Foundation, echoed similar sentiments about the success of the event. She noted the unique spirit of generosity among the wine community, stating, “This was a particularly meaningful evening... Raising more than $200,000 for The POLG Foundation is a wonderful result.”

The success of the Wine Legends Dinner reaffirms the power of community and collaboration in addressing urgent health issues. The funds raised will significantly support the important research work conducted by The POLG Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of families affected by mitochondrial disorders.
