HawkEye 360 Secures SBIR to Boost Space Domain Awareness



HawkEye 360, a prominent leader in signals intelligence data and analytics, has recently announced its achievement in securing a grant from the U.S. Space Rapid Capabilities Office (SpaceRCO). This grant places Innovative Signal Analysis (ISA) among a select trio of companies tasked with developing an innovative radar-warning sensor for military satellites operating in geosynchronous orbit (GEO). This initiative, under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, aims to significantly enhance detection capabilities of radar emissions from ground-based systems that track these satellites.

As orbital activities rise, so do the potential threats facing satellites in GEO. SpaceRCO’s initiative addresses these growing concerns by creating advanced threat awareness systems. The reason ISA was selected for this prestigious grant lies in their established proficiency in signal processing algorithms and compact payload systems that support defense missions. Their latest Generation 3 Payload Processor is designed to operate effectively under the low-size, weight, and power (low-SWaP) conditions that align with the priorities of the U.S. Space Force.

Previously, ISA validated its key capabilities through its ENCORE payload which was successfully deployed aboard the International Space Station, showcasing its ability to detect and analyze a wide array of radar signals from low Earth orbit. The explosive growth of satellite technology demands increased vigilance and situational awareness, particularly as adversaries develop their capabilities in space. Todd Probert, the Chief Operating Officer at HawkEye 360, emphasized the urgency of improving GEO awareness, underscoring ISA’s commitment to innovation within the signal-processing domain.

With the SBIR funding, ISA’s radar-warning sensor for small satellites will undergo development that includes onboard processing capabilities, secure communication features, and rigorous testing in various operational conditions. It will pave the way for a smooth transition to production and possible integration within the architectures of the U.S. Space Force and the Department of War. Moreover, this technology is not confined to defense; there are immense opportunities for dual-use applications that range from space traffic monitoring to electromagnetic environment characterization and diagnostics for commercial satellites.
