Daesang Group's 5th University Student Smartphone Film Festival
On August 24, Daesang Group successfully hosted the 5th DAESANG E.T.F.F. (Eat & Travel Film Festival) in Bali, Indonesia. This year’s festival brought together a dynamic group of 48 university students hailing from 17 countries, each eager to explore the intersection of food and film through the lens of their cultural backgrounds.
A Global Cultural Collaboration
The event, now in its fifth iteration, has established itself as an important cultural exchange program rooted in Daesang Group's core value of Respect. Over a period of 15 days, students collaborated in teams to script, shoot, edit, and promote their five-minute films, all utilizing the convenience of smartphones. The participating countries included Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Iran, Cambodia, India, the United States, and Russia, showcasing diversity in perspectives and ideas.
In addition to film production, the festival offered participants the unique opportunity to engage with local culture. The combination of culinary experiences, including tastings of beloved K-Food dishes like tteokbokki and dumplings, added a flavorful dimension to the creative process. The films culminated in a screening held at the Atlas Super Club, Asia's largest club, where an international crowd gathered to witness the creativity that emerged from this collaboration.
Creating a Unique Festival Experience
Leading up to the awards ceremony, Daesang K-Food Week generated excitement among festival-goers and local residents alike. With collaborations from eight popular restaurants in Bali, visitors enjoyed specially curated K-Food platters, made available through creative marketing strategies that included eye-catching outdoor advertisements around Bali's Kuta Beach.
The premiere attracted a crowd of global tourists eager to immerse themselves in both the food and the cinematic creativity of their peers. Guests enjoyed a variety of dishes from Daesang’s brand O'Food while watching the films, creating an environment that blended gastronomy with artistry. One attendee remarked on the synergy of experiencing food and film together, emphasizing the enjoyment of the gimbap as a highlight of the evening.
Recognizing Global Talent
Awards were given in several categories: Grand Prize, Best Film, Best Promotion, Best Actor, and Best Participation. The Grand Prize was awarded to Team Balicious for their amusingly insightful film "Coconut Allergy Club," which humorously tackled societal prejudices surrounding food allergies. The accolades were determined by a panel of esteemed judges, including notable figures from the Korean film industry, enhancing the festival's credibility and prestige.
Choi Sung-soo, CEO of Daesang Holdings, reflected on the festival's evolution from a traditional cultural exchange to a global celebration of culinary arts and creativity. He expressed a commitment to further enriching students' experiences through opportunities that allow them to travel and grow into global leaders within the culinary and film industries.
Conclusion: A Legacy of Culinary Innovation
Daesang Group, founded in 1956, has established a powerful global presence within the food industry, evolving from Korea's first overseas plant export in 1973 to becoming a leader in K-Food worldwide. With subsidiaries in several countries, Daesang continues to innovate and expand its product lines, exemplifying the fusion of traditional Korean cuisine with modern culinary trends. The DAESANG E.T.F.F. not only reinforces this legacy but also paves the way for future generations of creative talent.
