Innovations for a Sustainable Future
In an ambitious push towards sustainable development, Tokyo is spearheading a project aimed at harnessing the collective strengths of various regions across Japan. The Metropolitan Government of Tokyo has recently launched an initiative focused on collaboration among businesses and local governments to effectively address pressing social issues and administrative challenges.
The initiative is part of the enhanced startup strategy, dubbed the "Global Innovation Strategy 2.0 STARTUP & SCALEUP," which will be deployed in the coming years. This strategy emphasizes cooperation with startups that demonstrate the potential to create impactful solutions for societal and administrative hurdles. The ethos of this endeavor revolves around the idea of "coexistence and mutual prosperity"—a principle that highlights the importance of mutual support among diverse regions of Japan.
As part of this project, a pitch event will be held in April next year to tackle regional challenges faced by Akita, Yamagata, Niigata, and Tokyo. The goal is to foster innovation nationally by inviting startups to present their solutions to these challenges. Following this, workshops and pitch events will be organized to facilitate discussions between skilled startups and municipal staff, encouraging them to work together towards effective solutions.
The Process
A structured approach will be taken to ensure participants can engage meaningfully in the initiative:
1.
Call for Participants: Beginning June 18, 2023, businesses interested in addressing three specified themes will be invited to apply. Each theme will feature approximately five selected businesses, with judicious selection based on the relevance of applications.
2.
Workshops: On July 13, 2023, workshops will be held where businesses and municipal staff will engage in dialogue to explore potential solutions. These workshops will be conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-person participation with online accessibility.
3.
Pitch Events: By the end of July, pitch events will take place, allowing businesses to propose concrete solutions identified during workshops. This event will serve as a platform for matching potential collaborative partners—startups and local government entities.
4.
Partnership Discussions: Starting in August, discussions will ensue regarding public procurement and other collaborations on services and products, culminating in the initiation of projects following successful negotiations.
Themes and Collaboration
One of the thematic areas will connect with the startup pitch event "UPGRADE with TOKYO," aimed at solving challenges within the Tokyo metropolitan framework. Interested parties can access application guidelines and forms through the Startup Strategy Promotion Headquarters' website.
