The Legacy of Fujio Akatsuka: 90th Anniversary Exhibition
From April 4 through July 26, 2028, the Tokiwa-so Manga Museum in Toshima Ward will host a special exhibition commemorating the 90th anniversary of iconic gag manga artist Fujio Akatsuka. This exhibition, titled "The Birth of the King of Gag Manga: Fujio Akatsuka - It All Started with 'Nama-chan'," promises to take visitors on an enlightening journey through the creative evolution of this legendary artist.
Highlights of the Exhibition
The exhibition will showcase a comprehensive collection of artworks, original sketches, and memorabilia that trace Akatsuka's journey from his early days as a shojo manga artist to the pivotal works during his time at Tokiwa-so. It will dive into his pioneering gag manga, "Nama-chan," which serves as the foundation of his humor style, leading up to his beloved series, "Osomatsu-kun," and his defining work, "Tensai Bakabon."
A Glimpse into Akatsuka's Philosophy
One of the key features of the exhibition will be the first public screening of newly discovered interviews with Akatsuka, shedding light on the philosophy underlying his works and the significant relationships that influenced his career. Despite facing difficulties and often expressing his struggles during his Tokiwa-so era, Akatsuka ultimately blossomed into the revered "King of Gag Manga". This exhibition will delve into his inner world and the transformative experiences that shaped his unique expression.
What is 'Nama-chan'?
"Nama-chan" marks Akatsuka's inaugural gag comic series, serialized in Akita Shoten's "Manga King" from December 1958 to May 1962. This autobiographical work humorously captures the day-to-day life of a young boy and his interactions with his mother, epitomizing the genesis of Akatsuka's comedic style.
