Connor Wallace Recognized as Georgia's Work-Based Learning Student of the Year 2026
Connor Wallace: A Leader in Work-Based Learning
In a remarkable achievement, Connor Wallace, a high school senior at Stephens County High School, has been honored as Georgia's 2026 Work-Based Learning Student of the Year. The announcement came during the Governor's Workforce Summit held in Atlanta on September 24, with recognition from Governor Brian Kemp himself. Connor's dedication and accomplishments in the Work-Based Learning program at ASI Southeast have truly set him apart.
A Journey of Commitment and Excellence
Connor embarked on his journey with ASI Southeast in December 2024, shortly after his sixteenth birthday. Since then, he has maintained an impeccable record—zero absences, tardies, or early departures, earning him the esteemed 2025 Perfect Attendance Award. As of mid-August 2026, he has accumulated an impressive 2,534 hours in the Work-Based Learning program and is on track to surpass ASI's record of 3,100 hours before his graduation.
His commitment goes beyond just attendance; Connor has actively contributed to improving processes at ASI. He took part in the Locker Business Unit's continuous improvement competition, where he re-engineered the UPS staging process, thereby eliminating approximately 158,720 steps annually. This initiative saved nearly $5,000 each year, ultimately winning him the 'Most Steps Saved' award for his unit. Connor's team was subsequently recognized for their outstanding work at ASI's company-wide continuous improvement championship, delivering around $35,000 in annual savings. His leadership and presentation skills earned him the title of Best Presenter in that competition.
Leadership in Action
Currently, Connor serves as the Work-Based Learning Team Captain at ASI, acting as a pivotal connection between the company, students, and Stephens County High School. His responsibilities have included conducting plant tours, representing ASI at job fairs, and training fellow employees in various roles. His manager, Clint Frady, describes Connor as respectful, dependable, and a natural motivator for those around him. Connor exemplifies what can be achieved when a determined student is given the opportunity to thrive in a real workplace environment.
The Need for Skilled Labor in Northeast Georgia
The Work-Based Learning program at ASI Southeast, which was established by Connor's father, Stephen Wallace, fulfills a critical need in northeast Georgia where manufacturers face stiff competition over a limited pool of skilled applicants. Instead of relying solely on external recruitment, ASI focuses on developing talent from within, familiarizing students with the company culture and operations long before they graduate. This proactive approach has resulted in 67 students being hired from area high schools, contributing over 57,736 hours of work and generating more than $1 million in wages that significantly impact the local economy.
The success of this program is evident—approximately 80% of graduates continue their careers with ASI, with many staying for three years and beyond. In nine years, the program has only seen one involuntary termination, demonstrating its effectiveness in workforce development.
A Bright Future Ahead
Connor Wallace's recognition as Georgia's Work-Based Learning Student of the Year is a testament to the value of practical experience and dedication in building the workforce of tomorrow. His story is an inspiring example for all students aspiring to make a meaningful impact in their communities and industries while still in school. With the continued support of partners like ASI Southeast and local educational institutions, more students like Connor will undoubtedly find success in their careers, benefiting both themselves and the wider community.
