Wine Spectator Unveils Top 150 Italian Wines for OperaWine 2027

On October 27, 2026, at the wine2wine Vinitaly Business Forum in New York City, Wine Spectator made a remarkable announcement, revealing its selection of 150 Italian wine producers for the upcoming OperaWine 2027. This prestigious event serves as the grand opening for Vinitaly, one of the world's most significant wine fairs, which is scheduled to take place in Verona, Italy, on April 10, 2027. Senior editors Alison Napjus and Bruce Sanderson led the announcement, sharing the stage with esteemed industry figures such as Matteo Zoppas, President of the Italian Trade Agency, Federico Bricolo of Veronafiere, and others.

A Rigorous Selection Process

Wine Spectator employs a thorough editorial and tasting process to curate this year's selected producers and wines. The selection is headed by senior editors Bruce Sanderson and Alison Napjus, along with a comprehensive tasting panel. The editorial team meticulously evaluates the wines based on visual quality, aroma, and taste, alongside ongoing reviews and ratings. Beyond just wine quality, producers are assessed on factors such as historical importance, consistency, and their representation of Italy’s diverse wine regions.

The chosen wineries are categorized into three segments: Legacy Icons, Classic Producers, and the newly introduced Led by Women group. This year, 31 wineries fall under the Legacy Icons category, having consistently demonstrated outstanding quality since OperaWine’s inception in 2012. The Classic Producers category includes 73 recognized estates that boast an impressive track record, while the Led by Women category spotlights 46 female-led wineries, emphasizing the growing recognition of women in winemaking.

New Participants and Returnees

Among the 150 producers, 16 are debuting at OperaWine for the first time, while 17 wineries are making a return after being absent for a period. Wine Spectator expressed enthusiasm for the rich history and future potential represented by this diverse selection.
