Celebrating Five Years of the Tokiwa-so Manga Museum: A Destination for Manga Lovers

Tokiwa-so Manga Museum: Celebrating Five Remarkable Years

The Tokiwa-so Manga Museum, a cherished site for manga enthusiasts, is set to commemorate its fifth anniversary with special events from July 1 to 27, following its grand opening on July 7, 2020. Located in Toshima Ward, this museum has become a significant cultural landmark, attracting over 210,000 visitors since its inception.

A Brief History of Tokiwa-so

Originally built in 1952, Tokiwa-so was known as a legendary apartment where famous manga artists, including Osamu Tezuka, gathered to hone their craft. Unfortunately, the building was demolished in 1982 due to deterioration. However, through extensive research and community efforts, the museum was established to preserve the essence of Tokiwa-so, allowing visitors a glimpse into the life and times of these iconic artists.

Anniversary Celebrations

To mark this milestone anniversary, the museum has planned a series of exciting activities. Guests will have the chance to see exclusive exhibitions, including a rare display of "Tokiwa-so fusuma" decorated with messages from its former residents. Additionally, a hanging scroll featuring word art inspired by the works of the late George Yamauchi, who passed away earlier this year, will also be showcased. Furthermore, special commemorative calligraphies from more than 100 manga artists will be presented in two segments until December 28, 2023, showcasing the rich artistic traditions associated with Tokiwa-so.

From July 1 to 6, the museum will host a "Community Day," allowing Toshima Ward residents free entry with appropriate identification, emphasizing the museum's commitment to engaging with the local community and celebrating its roots.

Insights from the Local Authorities

According to a representative from the Toshima Ward, the support from both local and nationwide fans of Tokiwa-so has been essential in reaching this five-year milestone. The museum plays a crucial role in promoting the dreams of aspiring manga artists and serves as a cultural hub for the community. The representative expressed hope that this anniversary would encourage more residents to familiarize themselves with Tokiwa-so and its integral place in manga history.
