California American Water Strengthens Water Future with WF2050 Agreement

On May 12, 2026, California American Water took a significant step towards enhancing water management practices by signing the Water Forum Agreement 2050 (WF2050). This agreement, which involves a coalition of water providers, public agencies, environmental organizations, and business leaders, aims to guide the Sacramento region in its commitment to sustainable water management and environmental stewardship through the year 2050.

Audie Foster, the Director of Operations for California American Water’s Northern Division, signed the agreement, underscoring the company's commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at ensuring a reliable water supply and ecological preservation in the region. He expressed honor in representing the company at this important signing, highlighting the shared vision for effective long-term water management.

The WF2050 builds upon over 25 years of regional cooperation, following the initial agreement established back in 2000. This updated version serves as a framework to tackle various challenges that climate change presents, including intensified drought conditions, increased water demand, and impacts on the delicate ecosystem of the lower American River. The two main objectives underpinning the agreement are to secure a dependable water supply for community needs and to protect the wildlife, recreational, and aesthetic values of the lower American River.

Sarah Leeper, President of California American Water, expressed pride in standing with regional partners in endorsing this agreement. She remarked that it continues a proven model of collaboration which not only focuses on water supply reliability but also emphasizes environmental responsibility.

As part of the WF2050, new strategies and tools are set to be implemented, including the American River Climate Adaptation Program (ARCAP). This initiative aims to bolster the region's water resilience by enhancing storage capabilities, supporting groundwater recharge, improving water conservation efforts, and maintaining cooler water temperatures in the river for the benefit of fish and wildlife.

These collective actions will position the Sacramento region to manage its water resources effectively amidst changing climate conditions, while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to future challenges. California American Water, as a stakeholder in the Water Forum's Water Caucus, remains devoted to collaborating with regional entities to prioritize the goals outlined in the agreement.
