Urielle's Inspiring Journey Towards a Brighter Future in Education
In a small classroom in Bangui, Central African Republic, a remarkable young woman named Urielle is proving that sight is not a barrier to achieving dreams. At just 20 years old, Urielle is not only a dedicated student but also a passionate advocate for education among those with disabilities. Having lost her vision at the tender age of three, she has turned obstacles into opportunities, showcasing an inspiring spirit guided by unwavering support from her parents and educators.
Urielle's journey began when she enrolled in an education center for children with vision impairments funded by the global fund Education Cannot Wait (ECW). These centers offer customized educational solutions for children and young adults who, like Urielle, face the challenges of visual impairment. Throughout the country, these initiatives aim to empower girls and boys with the tools needed to thrive, and for Urielle, this was just the beginning of her educational adventures.
Each day, Urielle boards a tuk-tuk specifically organized for students of the special school, transporting her to the center where she learns to read and write in Braille. With lessons structured around national standards, she has honed her literacy skills, unveiling a newfound passion for storytelling and understanding social issues. "I particularly enjoy social science because it allows me to hear and learn about the lives and struggles of people around the world," Urielle passionately shares.
Yet her academic journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Facing stigma and misconceptions from peers and even some family members, Urielle was told that she was better suited for domestic work than schooling. However, the unwavering support from her family enabled her to ignore the doubts and focus on her education, recognizing the powerful role it plays in her life.
Urielle understands that education widens perspectives and enlightens futures. "The more I learn, the more stories unfold in my mind. I am determined to become a journalist," she asserts, reflecting the aspirations she has nurtured through her studies. Beyond traditional learning, the center also offers vocational training courses, equipping graduates with skills that can lead to employment, including opportunities within public service.
Despite the socio-economic challenges in the Central African Republic—one of the toughest places for children due to ongoing conflicts and natural disasters—Urielle’s determination remains unshaken. The country continues to struggle with inadequate education systems, often plagued by a shortage of qualified teachers and proper facilities. For children with disabilities, the challenge heightens significantly as families may segregate them for fear of prejudice.
However, Urielle’s parents are determined to help her reach her potential without limitations. They have recognized her incredible abilities and encouraged her to pursue education that can change the narrative for individuals facing similar challenges. "With the right support, I want to achieve so much more. I dream of becoming a Paralympic athlete; I train three times a week for long-distance running!" she recalls, illustrating that her ambitions reach beyond academics.
With a bright smile, Urielle dreams of one day running her own radio show, continuing to share stories that resonate and inspire others. "I know I have a long road ahead, potentially six more years before I can attend university, but I firmly believe that storytelling is my passion, and I will make it happen!" Her aspirations exhibit the profound truth that every child—when given access to quality education, resources, and support—can thrive.
