A Century of Love and Loyalty: Purina Dog Chow's Remarkable Journey
In 1926, a vision was born. William Danforth, the founder of Purina, recognized the profound shift in how dogs fit into American homes; they were transitioning from mere workers to beloved family members. As the 100th anniversary of Purina Dog Chow approaches, the brand looks back at a century of cherished companionship and loyalty, celebrating this milestone with a unique initiative: the
'Giving You 100' contest.
A Heartfelt Contest to Celebrate Dogs
From May 1 to June 26, 2026, dog owners nationwide are invited to participate in the
'Giving You 100' contest, where they can share entertaining and touching stories about their dogs. This initiative honors the everyday ways dogs enrich our lives, whether by providing comfort, performing tricks, or simply being a loyal companion. The contest promises a remarkable grand prize of
$100,000.
Entries will be evaluated across five categories:
Most Athletic, Most Entertaining, Most Heartwarming, Most Unexpected, and Most Life-changing. An independent panel will select finalists, and from August 10 to August 21, 2026, the public will cast votes via the myPurina app to determine the grand prize winner. Each of the four finalists will also receive a year’s supply of Dog Chow, ensuring every pup enjoys quality nourishment.
Brent Gleckler, Chief Marketing Officer at Nestle Purina Petcare, expressed the sentiment behind this celebration: “For 100 years, from farms to the family room, dogs have been giving us everything. Dog Chow has been right there with them, and the 'Giving You 100' Contest is our way of thanking dog owners for trusting us to provide high-quality nutrition for their dogs.”
The Legacy of Purina Dog Chow
Since its inception, Dog Chow has been at the forefront of the evolving relationship between dogs and humans. The brand has significantly contributed to reshaping perceptions about dogs, highlighting their vital role as family members. As urbanization drew individuals away from agricultural lifestyles, dogs transitioned into indoor companions. Purina anticipated this change and aimed to create nutritious pet food that facilitated a healthier, longer life for dogs, ensuring they could enjoy quality time with their families.
Historically, many dogs subsisted on table scraps until Dog Chow introduced dry dog food that met their nutritional needs. The shift to kibble was revolutionary, enabling affordable, shelf-stable nutrition accessible to every American family. This transition transformed the family dog from a mere backyard presence into an integrated member of household life. Interestingly, during the challenges posed by World War II, when canned dog food was scarce, Dog Chow pioneered the process of extrusion to create modern kibble, which remains a standard today for its nutritional balance.
Community and Contribution
Purina remains committed to the health and wellness of pets. The company’s initiative is not limited to the anniversary celebration; it reflects a broader commitment to community. Over the last five years, Purina has invested more than
$150 million into organizations that enhance the quality of life for both pets and their owners, ensuring pets remain a central theme in families everywhere.
With
nearly 500 scientists and veterinarians, Purina guarantees unparalleled quality and nutritional value in its products, ensuring pets live full, vibrant lives. The brand continues to resonate in American culture, marking milestones in pet care and forging deep connections with pet owners,
