AHN Allegheny General Hospital Steps Up for 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh

AHN Prepares for an Unforgettable NFL Draft Experience in Pittsburgh

The excitement is building in Pittsburgh as preparations for the highly anticipated 2026 NFL Draft are in full swing. Leading the charge is Allegheny Health Network (AHN), which has unveiled a detailed strategy to ensure medical support for the influx of visitors expected to flock to the city.

The AHN Allegheny General Hospital, a prominent trauma center, is located just a stone's throw from the draft's center near Acrisure Stadium. Not only does this facility play a pivotal role in the community, but it also serves as the inspiration for the well-received HBO Max series 'THE PITT,' illuminating its significance beyond just healthcare.

Mark Sevco, the president of AHN, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh and the NFL to make this year's draft secure and enjoyable for everyone involved. He stated, "With the anticipated surge in medical needs, we are dedicated to providing rapid and accessible healthcare, ensuring our hospitals and our downtown clinic near Point State Park are fully prepared to assist the community."

From April 22 to April 25, the AHN Downtown Express Care clinic will operate daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Located at Highmark's Penn Avenue Place, this walk-in facility will serve as a frontline response center for minor health issues, offering immediate care for ailments like the common cold or minor injuries. To further enhance care options, patients with appointments can also switch to video consultations if necessary. Additionally, AHN's 24/7 Virtual Urgent Care service will be available to both new and returning patients, ensuring comprehensive support at all hours.

To bolster care during the event, a mobile clinic will be stationed in Market Square. This unit will be on-site to provide first-aid services and address minor health concerns of visitors. Those in need of more advanced treatment will be directed to the AHN Downtown Express Care unit or an emergency department nearby.

Near the draft festivities, healthcare professionals from AHN's Prehospital Care unit and AGH will establish a medical fort adjacent to Acrisure Stadium. This setup will deliver immediate medical assistance to attendees, with a focused team coordinating seamlessly with emergency medical services (EMS) within the stadium and throughout the event area.

A command center will also be established at Nova Place on the North Side to facilitate patient flow among various care sites and to mitigate any pressure on AGH's emergency department. As a Level I trauma center, AGH stands ready to handle an influx of patients at any moment, ensuring that emergency needs are adequately met.

Recognizing the challenges posed by the anticipated large crowds and traffic interruptions, AGH is working closely with both City and NFL representatives to maintain clear access for non-emergency patients attending scheduled appointments during the draft week. The medical director of the AGH emergency department, Dr. Brent Rau, highlighted the hospital's history of managing events that significantly increase community attendance, reassuring that the healthcare team is poised to meet public health needs effectively.

In summary, AHN's meticulous planning demonstrates its commitment to the health and safety of Pittsburgh residents and visitors alike. With advanced medical care and a proactive approach, the hospital aims to contribute positively to a memorable NFL Draft experience in 2026.
