Habitat for Humanity Launches 'Let's Open the Door' Campaign to Address Global Housing Crisis

Habitat for Humanity's 'Let's Open the Door' Campaign

As Habitat for Humanity celebrates its 50 years of tireless work to ensure safe and affordable housing for everyone, they are launching a significant global campaign titled 'Let's Open the Door'. This initiative aims to illuminate the dire need for access to affordable and sustainable housing globally.

Every day, one in three individuals worldwide wakes up without the certainty of a safe home, a fact that underscores the urgency of the current housing crisis. The campaign will not only raise awareness but also actively engage communities in finding solutions.

Milestones of the Campaign

Launched with its first event at Garibaldi Plaza in New York City, the campaign will host pop-up installations in key cities around the world. These installations symbolize open doors, encouraging public discourse about the importance of housing and its profound impact on communities. Cities highlighted in this initiative include Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, London, and even across the border in Mexico City, revealing story after story of how access to housing transforms lives.

Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, emphasized the organization’s commitment: "Housing has been central to Habitat's mission for 50 years. We recognize that access to adequate housing is pivotal for a dignified life. Each of us can play a role in improving housing accessibility, be it through voice, time, or talents. Together, we can open doors to homeownership for families everywhere."

Engaging Communities

The campaign is being supported by major partners, including State Farm, Wells Fargo, Whirlpool, and Lowe's, who will contribute to various activities and projects across more than 60 countries. Among the initiatives, local Habitat affiliates will organize events like panel discussions featuring housing experts and ceremonial home dedications, showcasing the community efforts towards tackling the housing crisis.

Drew and Jonathan Scott, long-time supporters of Habitat, have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of home: "We've seen how deeply a house can affect a family. Solving the housing crisis requires more than just building homes; it requires raising awareness and mobilizing support to make housing equity a reality. We are honored to support the 'Home is Key' initiative again this spring." They also noted their intent to participate directly in upcoming events, further encouraging community involvement.

Call to Action

Habitat for Humanity is also gearing up for its 'Home is Key' initiative this April, focusing on raising funds and awareness while pushing for innovative housing solutions across the United States. This month-long effort is designed to inspire stakeholders and advocates alike to leverage their influence to promote equitable home ownership and foster more resilient communities.

Continuing its tradition, Habitat will also run an experiential tour throughout ten cities to celebrate its decades of impactful work, highlighting the personal stories of those whose lives were changed by access to housing. Each open door will represent not just individual stories but collective opportunities for lasting change.

Since its inception in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has aided over 65 million people across the globe in building, improving, or financing their homes. As they embark on another 50 years of service, their vision remains clear: a world where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.
