Introduction
The upcoming
2025 Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Pacific Masters, held from November 13th to 16th at the Pacific Club in Gotemba, Shizuoka, will feature innovative sustainability efforts, including the use of smart trash cans known as
SmaGO. These solar-powered trash cans will not only enhance waste management but also maintain the aesthetic appeal of the event venue.
Background
Since its inception in 1972, the Pacific Masters has become one of Japan's most prestigious men's professional golf tournaments. Held at the beautiful Pacific Club in Gotemba, the event regularly attracts large crowds, with approximately 27,000 visitors anticipated for the 2024 edition. This increase in foot traffic also leads to a significant rise in waste generated, particularly from food containers, putting pressure on staff to manage clean-up effectively.
To tackle this challenge,
SmaGO smart trash cans, which automatically compress waste to one-fifth of its size, have been installed in the popular food area called
Gotemba Ramen Festa 2025. This initiative, implemented by
Mitsui Sumitomo Card, aims to enhance waste collection efficiency while ensuring a clean and inviting environment for all guests.
Features of SmaGO
The
SmaGO trash can operates on solar power, automatically compressing the waste it collects and managing communications about its fill levels. This system not only streamlines waste collection but also contributes to environmental sustainability. The design of SmaGO features clear pictograms for easy waste separation and is wrapped in information highlighting its connection to the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Looking Forward
In future events,
Forcetec plans to expand the deployment of
SmaGO across various sports, music, and community events throughout Japan. To cater to diverse event needs, a rental plan for short-term use of these smart trash cans will be made available.
