Celebrating Hanae Mori's Centenary
The National Art Center, Tokyo is currently hosting a remarkable exhibition titled "Celebrating 100 Years of Hanae Mori: Vital Type," which opened to the public on May 20. This exhibition illuminates the enduring legacy and unique aesthetic of the renowned Japanese fashion designer, Hanae Mori. To complement the exhibition, a special talk event featuring her granddaughter, Mizuki Mori, a model and television personality, was held at the venue. This report provides insights into the event and the ongoing influence of Hanae Mori.
During the event, Mizuki Mori, adorned in a stunning yellow dress adorned with crane motifs designed by her grandmother, took the stage alongside Natsu Onodera, a researcher associated with the exhibition. The discussion was moderated by TV Asahi's Sayaka Shimomura, focusing on three main themes: the essence of Hanae Mori as a person, her journey as a woman, and the intersection of fashion and self-identity.
Mizuki Mori expressed her enthusiastic admiration for the exhibition, stating, "This exhibition is extremely rich in content. Not only can you view the works, but you can also gain insights into my grandmother's way of life. The vibrant colors around the display uplift the spirits of those who visit, bringing joy to their hearts." Reflecting on her grandmother’s character, she recounted, "My grandmother was powerful and energetic; I never heard her complain. She often said, 'I create beautiful things so I don’t want to voice grievances.'" Mizuki also shared personal memories, revealing how, as a child, she would watch her grandmother work and play with fabric scraps gifted to her by Hanae.
When discussing the iconic symbol of Hanae's work—the butterfly—Mizuki eloquently described it as representing "the image of flying freely and gracefully." She continued, stating, "Hanae's dresses not only wrapped the body comfortably but also instilled a sense of elegance. Right up until her last days, she remained engaged in her work and was always curious about trends. She regularly checked on me and others, asking, ‘Are you well? Are you eating properly?’ She was a gentle soul who worried more about others than herself."
Onodera, who organized the exhibition, introduced Hanae Mori as an exemplar of the 'Vital Type,' embodying the vibrant and lively spirit of women. She explained, "When Hanae began her career in 1951, the employment rate for educated women in Japan was a mere 0.7%. When she participated in the New York Collection in 1965, everyone around her opposed her, but only her husband, Ken, supported her. Family played a significant role in her international success.”
Delving deeper into the designs of Hanae Mori, Onodera noted, "Her garments often reflected what was needed in contemporary society, offering wearers comfort and a sense of companionship. She expanded her creative reach by venturing into licensing across various fields, crafting a lifestyle rather than just clothing. Her designs enriched life beyond apparel." In an industry predominantly filled with male designers during her time in Paris haute couture, Hanae distinguished herself by creating 'clothes made by women for women,' bridging global perspectives with local experiences. She elevated fashion to the realms of culture and art through founding influential publications such as 'Ryuukou Tsushin' and 'STUDIO VOICE,' enrichening Japan's fashion narrative.
Approximately 240 attendees, who were selected through a pre-event lottery, attended the talk, engaging thoroughly for over an hour. This event provided a unique opportunity for visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Hanae Mori as a person and the essence of her creations.
Upcoming Television Appearance
Mizuki Mori will also appear on the popular talk show 'Tetsuko's Room' on June 8, 2026. Since its launch in 1976, this legendary program hosted by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi has welcomed numerous influential figures to engage in dialogue. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the show, setting the record for the most episodes hosted by a single presenter. Mizuki will showcase Hanae Mori’s designs while reminiscing with Tetsuko, who previously visited the Hanae Mori exhibition, reflecting on cherished memories and invaluable lessons inherited from her grandmother.
