FIA Smart Driving Challenge Welcomes New Ambassadors
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has officially announced a fresh roster of ambassadors for its FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC) program, aimed at enhancing safer and more sustainable driving practices. This year, the program welcomes seven accomplished drivers from different disciplines within motorsport: Dania Akeel (W2RC), Roman Bilinski (FIA F3), Maro Engel (FIA GT World Cup and DTM), Taylor Gill (JWRC), Romet Jürgenson (WRC2), Aliyyah Koloc (W2RC), and Yifei Ye (WEC).
The FIA SDC is powered by advanced technology from the Swedish risk intelligence firm, Greater Than, offering an AI-enhanced app that gives users access to real-time feedback, driving performance assessments, and tailored tips designed to cultivate more responsible driving habits. The app's unique scoring system allows users to track their progress and compare their results on a global leaderboard. The challenge's concept was first introduced in 2019 and has gained remarkable traction, with participants from 92 countries contributing to its growing impact.
Last year alone, users of the app managed to decrease their fuel or battery usage by an astounding average of 9%. The program is not just about individual improvement; it has effectively contributed to a culture of responsibility and awareness among drivers. Additionally, the performances of the best drivers in the previous season demonstrated a marked reduction in emissions, with some achieving up to a one-third decrease in their CO2 impact.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of the challenge, stating, "The FIA stands as the united voice of motor sport and mobility, driven by a commitment to advance innovation. The FIA Smart Driving Challenge represents a crucial step toward fostering a culture of safety and sustainability for all road users." He expressed hope that this initiative would continue to inspire drivers and make a significant difference on the roads.
Willem Groenewald, Secretary General for Automobile Mobility at the FIA, added, "We believe that every driver can make a difference—whether they are a world championship contender on their way to the track or a commuter heading home. We hope that users download this app, join a team, and help us drive this movement."
The program will kick off its seventh season on April 1, allowing drivers of all backgrounds and vehicles to participate. It's an inclusive opportunity for anyone interested in improving their driving skills and making a positive impact on road safety. Furthermore, the platform has been utilized at recent United Nations climate conferences (COP28 and COP29) to highlight the role of technology in reducing emissions globally, showcasing its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Johanna Forseke, Chief Business Officer and Deputy CEO at Greater Than, expressed excitement about the community engagement the FIA SDC has seen over the years: "It's amazing to have witnessed such strong engagement in the FIA SDC. We're delighted that such well-known motorsport ambassadors have come on board for this seventh season to build on the program's positive momentum and further inspire safe, sustainable behaviors among drivers around the world."
By joining the FIA Smart Driving Challenge, drivers can benefit not only from the guidance of their chosen ambassadors but also engage in exclusive content and camaraderie within this budding community of mindful drivers.
