EnviTec Biogas Unveils Largest Anaerobic Digestion Facility in the U.S. to Boost Renewable Energy

EnviTec Biogas Commissions Landmark Anaerobic Digestion Plant in the U.S.

In a significant advancement for renewable energy, EnviTec Biogas has successfully launched its largest anaerobic digestion facility in the United States. This strategic move further solidifies its collaboration with SJI Renewable Energy Ventures and local suppliers, marking a new chapter in the biogas industry. Located in South Dakota, the plant has been operational since the start of the year, processing an impressive 300,000 gallons (1,100 cubic meters) of manure daily, primarily sourced from over 9,500 dairy cows.

This facility is expected to yield a substantial output of renewable natural gas (RNG), producing 483 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) or 778 Nm³/h of biomethane, which translates to an impressive annual generation of approximately 177,000 million BTUs. Lars von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas USA Inc., emphasized the importance of this plant as part of a broader initiative. "This is the fifth of a planned 15 biogas plants for a leading company in renewable energy and sustainable solutions," he explained. A notable aspect of this partnership is the environmental benefits it brings—converting organic dairy waste into clean, renewable energy while also reducing carbon emissions associated with dairy farming.

EnviTec's commitment to sustainability extends beyond this latest facility. The company distinguishes itself as the only provider in the U.S. offering locally manufactured concrete tanks for biogas operations. This innovation has been made possible through a partnership with Collins Precast LLC, a prominent producer in the Upper Midwest. "Our concrete tank design is the first of its kind approved in South Dakota," Logan noted, highlighting the plant's unique contributions to both the local economy and the renewable energy sector.

Additionally, EnviTec has entered into a multi-year service contract with its client, ensuring continuous technical support and biological services from their Watertown office. This contract includes weekly sampling and analysis during the commissioning phase, ensuring optimal operational efficiency from the outset.

The partnership with SJI is unfolding rapidly, with three other projects having recently completed their initial cold commissioning phase. The firm plans to introduce its first projects in Minnesota later this year.

Since its inception in 2002, EnviTec Biogas AG has successfully launched over 700 biogas facilities across 18 countries, utilizing various feedstocks, including dairy manure and food waste. Their offerings encompass a range of technologies, such as anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading, ammonia stripping, bio-LCO2, and bio-LNG, showcasing a robust portfolio aimed at enhancing renewable energy generation around the globe.

EnviTec Biogas USA Inc., based in Beaverton, Oregon, is committed to the entire value chain necessary for producing renewable natural gas, covering planning, construction, and commissioning of anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading plants. The company not only ensures operational management but also emphasizes the importance of climate-neutral fuels for transport, a burgeoning sector within the renewable energy landscape.

With an impressive revenue of USD 429.29 million and an EBT of USD 90.84 million reported in 2023, the company showcases its growing influence as a leader in the biogas industry. EnviTec Biogas AG remains listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and continues to expand its reach, employing around 690 people across its international operations. As the world shifts towards sustainable energy solutions, EnviTec’s pioneering efforts highlight a compelling vision for a greener, cleaner future.
