FamilyMart Takes Major Steps for Energy Efficiency via Heat-Resistant Coatings on Air Conditioning Units

Enhancing Energy Efficiency at FamilyMart

As it approaches its 45th anniversary in September 2026, FamilyMart, led by President Takeo Kotani, is committed to its motto of "the most challenging" and is embarking on significant environmental initiatives. The company has announced a pioneering project aimed at promoting energy efficiency across approximately 3,000 stores by applying heat-resistant coatings to their air conditioning outdoor units, commencing in March 2026. This initiative seeks to mitigate the impact of sweltering summer heat on air conditioning equipment, thereby decreasing electricity consumption and reducing environmental burden while ensuring a consistent and comfortable shopping environment.

Background and Objectives of the Initiative

The unprecedented heat waves experienced in recent summers have exerted considerable strain on the air conditioning systems in stores. As a result, increased electricity consumption and decreased cooling efficiency have become pressing issues. Through the application of heat-resistant coatings on outdoor units, the temperature rise caused by direct sunlight will be significantly reduced, helping maintain optimal heat exchange efficiency and thereby cutting down electricity use.

Overview of Implementation and Features

From March to December 2026, the application of heat-resistant coatings will be conducted in phases across 3,000 stores. To guarantee high-quality implementation, meticulous processes will be applied from cleaning to finishing, ensuring long-lasting heat-blocking effects.
  • - Implementation Period: March 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026
  • - Target Stores: Approximately 3,000 FamilyMart outlets
  • - Coating Process:
1. Surface Preparation: Thorough washing and cleaning of outdoor units, ensuring removal of dirt and rust.
2. Three-layer Coating: Using durable and heat-resistant paint, a precise three-layer application will be executed utilizing rollers and other tools for optimal coverage.

Other Energy-Saving Initiatives

In addition to heat-resistant coatings, FamilyMart aims to create energy-efficient and comfortable spaces by promoting the adoption of a ventilation control system utilizing CO2 sensors, provided by CHC Systems, Inc. This system continuously monitors CO2 levels within the store, ensuring necessary ventilation while preventing excessive airflow, thus maximizing heating and cooling efficiency and reducing the burden on air conditioning systems. As of now, implementation has been completed at approximately 8,000 stores, and the company is committed to further advancing its energy-saving efforts.

Since February 2020, FamilyMart has established its medium- to long-term environmental objectives under the “FamilyMart Eco Vision 2050,” focusing on three main themes: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, addressing plastic waste, and minimizing food loss. Through this initiative, FamilyMart not only aims to contribute to the reduction of environmental impacts as outlined in this vision but also to lower operational costs amid rising energy prices, fostering a sustainable approach to store management that balances environmental and business considerations.

The Spirit Behind "In the Most Challenging Way"

As noted, FamilyMart will celebrate its 45th anniversary in September 2026. In adapting to the evolving times and striving to remain the customer's first choice beyond the boundaries of convenience stores, the company has introduced a new slogan: “Creating more of your favorites in the most challenging way.” Under this catchphrase, FamilyMart is undertaking its most ambitious challenges in eight categories: deliciousness, special offers, excitement, finding something wonderful, innovation, environmental friendliness, desirability as a workplace, and community beloved. The company is dedicated to pursuing its largest challenge to date. For more information, visit the 45th-anniversary special site here.
