MISHIMA Forest Earns Esteemed Recognition
On April 14, 2023, a significant milestone was achieved for environmental conservation with the recognition of "MISHIMA Forest" as a Nature Coexistence Site, a designation granted by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment. This recognition results from a partnership between Kochi Prefecture's Yusuhara Town and Dai-Nihon Daisan Consultant Co., Ltd., headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo.
Background of the Recognition
The term "Nature Coexistence Site" refers to areas where biodiversity conservation is actively promoted through various private initiatives. The newly recognized MISHIMA Forest features a diverse ecosystem comprising both coniferous and broadleaf woodlands, surrounded by rice fields and residential areas that define the satoyama environment.
As part of Dai-Nihon Daisan Consultant's extensive research on SX business development, a project was initiated that utilized corporate donations to promote reforestation efforts. This involved the clearing of coniferous monocultures and the planting of broadleaf trees, thereby transitioning part of the site into a thriving broadleaf forest. The project was executed in collaboration with Yusuhara Town, leading to a revitalization of the forest's ecological dynamic.
The area is now home to a variety of rare plant and animal species, such as the cuckoo, the ruddy kingfisher, and the Hakone shikechishida. Additionally, it hosts native species, including the Japanese brown tree frog, the Japanese grass lizard, and the Yamato butterfly, all contributing to the site's high biodiversity value. This variety has earned MISHIMA Forest its distinguished status as a hanging garden of intricate ecological services, showcasing a rich ecosystem teeming with indigenous species.
The Certification Ceremony
The certification ceremony took place at the Yusuhara Town Hall at 1:30 PM on April 14. Notable attendees included Tomoyuki Fukui, the Director of the Shikoku Office of the Ministry of the Environment, Yusuhara Town Mayor Motofumi Takahashi, and Takaki Mukou, the Environmental Energy Department Manager of Dai-Nihon Daisan Consultant. During the ceremony, the esteemed recognition certificate was presented, marking a celebratory moment for all parties involved.
Future Prospects
Moving forward, both Yusuhara Town and Dai-Nihon Daisan Consultant plan to engage in continuous environmental assessments and conservation activities within MISHIMA Forest. Their dedication to maintaining and enhancing local biodiversity will play a crucial role in sustainability efforts. Furthermore, Dai-Nihon Daisan Consultant aims to leverage the success of this initiative to deepen research into the utilization of forests and the creation of nature-based businesses, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability and ESG management through this project.
This recognition serves not only as a testament to the effective collaboration between governmental and private entities but also as an inspirational model for future conservation efforts throughout Japan. It underscores the importance of protecting and enhancing biodiversity by utilizing innovative approaches, supporting a harmonious coexistence of nature and humans for generations to come.
By fostering a sustainable relationship with the environment, the MISHIMA Forest stands as a beacon of hope, highlighting the vital connections between local communities, the flora and fauna they protect, and the broader goals of ecological sustainability. The success of such projects can inspire similar initiatives across various regions in Japan and the world, emphasizing the need for continued efforts in natural conservation.
