The Launch of 'WEAR THE ART': A Fusion of Art and Tradition in Japan

Embracing Art and Culture: The 'WEAR THE ART' Project

Fukushin Co., a glove manufacturer based in Higashikagawa, Kagawa Prefecture, has launched the 'WEAR THE ART' project, inspired by the recent Setouchi International Art Festival 2025. Founded in 1977, Fukushin specializes in the design and production of gloves and other textile accessories. The festival, held in Higashikagawa for the first time, drew over a million visitors, sparking an unprecedented exchange between local industries and artists.

The festival's impact led to a wave of creativity and collaboration, with numerous artists expressing interest in visiting Higashikagawa. This set the stage for an enriching dialogue between Fukushin and various artists, leading to the idea of merging art with local industries. Under the initiative of GAGAYGAYA GALLERY, based in Koenji, Tokyo, the project invites nine talented artists to explore and express their unique visions through the medium of gloves. The aim is to create a fashionable and cultural experience that customers can wear.

The Artists Behind the Gloves

As part of the 'WEAR THE ART' project, nine artists have collaborated with Fukushin to produce ten distinctive pairs of artistic gloves. Each piece reflects the individual artist's style, showcasing themes ranging from animals and tradition to landscapes, abstract designs, and pop art. Notable artists involved include:
1. RAMU ATAKU - Known for his whimsical designs, he created the 'Couple Gloves GUEEN' and 'Couple Gloves KING.'
2. Reou Ataka - His work, 'Ore-sama wa Jerinko,' plays with playful character themes.
3. Narumi Narumi - Engaging viewers with the 'Fukurou Sensei's Winter Attire.'
4. RYONA - Who has captured the essence of the Japanese landscape with 'Kazehayatsuki.'
5. Seika Hoshikara - Focusing on nostalgic themes with ‘Taisho Retro.’
6. Kokou Kanou - His piece, 'Melting Threads,' brings attention to the transient beauty of textiles.
7. Yoko Hatazawa - Known for her captivating 'Umi Umi Ushishi Ame Furashi.'
8. JUNKO IKEDA - Infusing rhythm into her glove designs.
9. Daiki Taguchi - Adding his unique twist to the diverse collection.

Each glove embodies the artist's interpretation of their environment and speaks to their creative journey, making them more than just functional items but wearable art.

Unveiling at the Tokyo International Gift Show

The gloves were officially unveiled to the public during the Tokyo International Gift Show in September 2025, marking a significant milestone for both the company and participating artists. The enthusiastic response from visitors has set high expectations for the project's future. Following the show, these gloves will be available for purchase starting in November 2025, making this artistic collaboration accessible to a broader audience.

The project is seen as a new avenue for combining art and local industry, with plans for distribution in retail stores, museum shops, and online platforms both domestically and internationally.

Insights from Fukushin

Fukushin's CEO, Jiro Fukuzaki, expressed his excitement about this fusion project. He stated, “The Setouchi International Art Festival has resulted in an unexpected chain of connections.
