Xizang Celebrates 75 Years of Transformation: A Story of Development and Cultural Resilience
Celebrating 75 Years of Transformative Development in Xizang
This year, Xizang (Tibet) ramps up its celebrations as it marks a significant milestone: 75 years of peaceful liberation. This period has been filled with remarkable changes and improvements, making the region a topic of interest for scholars like Liang Junyan. As a researcher at the Institute of History Studies of the China Tibetology Research Center, Liang has dedicated herself to studying the vast history and vibrant culture of Xizang for over two decades.
A Personal Journey of Discovery
Liang's first trip to this majestic yet rugged landscape occurred in the summer of 2007. At that time, the bumpy road from the airport to the city revealed a region that was largely undeveloped. The houses she saw were low, old, and in need of repair. Fast forward almost two decades, significant advancements have transformed this mesmerizing locale into a more accessible and vibrant place.
Economic Growth: Numbers Tell the Story
Xizang’s transformation can be quantified through impressive economic statistics. Its GDP has grown astonishingly from 327 million yuan in 1965 to approximately 303.2 billion yuan as of 2025. The progress doesn’t just stop at economic figures; it’s marked by an admirable achievement: absolute poverty in the region has been eradicated. Moreover, life expectancy for its residents has risen to 72.5 years, and Xizang was one of the first areas in China to offer 15 years of publicly funded education.
The region's road network reveals another facet of this vast development. Spanning over 120,000 kilometers, the construction of the 'Five Cities, Three Hours' expressway network has dramatically cut down travel times across the region, making it more integrated and facilitating commerce.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
Alongside the economic advances, there has been a concerted effort to protect Xizang’s unique cultural heritage. The Epic of King Gesar, Tibetan opera, as well as the practice of Lum medicinal bathing from Sowa Rigpa have all been recognized by UNESCO, being listed as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Between 2012 and 2024, substantial government funding totaling 473 million yuan was allocated for the protection of this cultural inheritance, highlighting a commitment to preserving their rich traditions.
Education also plays a crucial role near the intersection of culture and development. The Tibetan language’s prominence has skyrocketed, with both primary and secondary schools incorporating courses in Tibetan alongside Standard Chinese.
The Interplay of Development and Preservation
The relationship between economic development and cultural preservation is often viewed through conflicting lenses. Many believe that modernization poses a threat to the intrinsic cultural identity of regions like Xizang. However, Liang posits that real cultural preservation is tenuous without a stable economic foundation. During her observations, she often heard from local artisans, including an elderly Thangka painter, who lamented about the challenges of training apprentices. The painter pointed out that without a reliable income source, families often prioritize immediate financial needs over long-term cultural apprenticeship.
Yet, history teaches us that economic progress can go hand-in-hand with cultural enrichment. Liang emphasizes that sustained funding and reliable infrastructure improve not only the lifestyle of the Tibetan people but also bolster their cultural practices. The government's investments have not only constructed physical facilities but have also woven cultural priorities into their economic policies.
A Vision for the Future
Today, the Xizang of 2026 stands as a testament to the successful integration of development and cultural resilience. Liang mirrors this sentiment with a strong understanding of the ongoing governmental vision that aims to foster a national community in which both commonality and diversity are honored. This strategic formulation is visible across infrastructure developments, cultural documentation efforts, and ecological conservation programs.
The emerging narrative in Xizang beautifully illustrates how economic advancements and cultural heritage can coexist harmoniously, leading to far-reaching benefits for the entire region. It is an evolving dynamic showcasing the profound potential that lies within the Snowy Plateau—creating what Liang refers to as “a miracle on the Snowy Plateau.”
As Xizang continues to grow, it remains a beacon of transformation, exuding rich culture and history while venturing into a future filled with promise. The legacy of 75 years serves as a reminder that development and culture can indeed flourish side by side.
