Kobe Match Co. Launches Retro Matchbox Collaboration Goods for Incense Fans

Engaging Nostalgia with hibi: Kobe Match Co.'s Retro Revival

On June 3rd, Kobe Match Co., the esteemed manufacturer of the popular hibi incense, will unveil a delightful collaboration featuring retro matchbox designs. This initiative not only rekindles memories of days gone by but also enhances the experience of using incense, as users can now enjoy the aesthetic of vintage matchboxes while lighting their hibi products.

The project, branded as M.D.F (Match Design Factory), aims to celebrate the intricate designs that adorned matchboxes in the Showa era. It revives the sizes and shapes of classic matches that were once a staple in every household, offering two-piece sets that encapsulate the essence of nostalgia. In addition to the matches, a limited series of T-shirts featuring these iconic designs will be available for purchase by late June, bringing vintage flair to modern fashion.

The Origins of M.D.F Project

The M.D.F project traces its roots back to 2009 when Kobe Match Co. teamed up with Trunk Design Co.—a local design agency known for its artistic direction and branding expertise. Together, they embarked on a mission to reinterpret retro matchbox designs for contemporary living, thus launching an array of engaging products that once captured the public's imagination. The collaboration quickly gained traction and led to the development of the hibi brand that we know today.

Product Highlights: Retro Matchboxes

Kobe Match Co. proudly presents an extensive collection of retro matchboxes, available in two-piece sets across six design series, totaling 36 unique styles. Each pair retails for 440 yen (tax included). Here’s a sneak peek into the collection:

About Kobe Match Co.

Founded in 1929, Kobe Match Co. has stood at the forefront of the traditional match manufacturing industry in Hyogo Prefecture, responsible for producing roughly 70% of Japan’s matches. Though they cater to households, the company has also ventured into creating promotional material for businesses, hotels, restaurants, and various novelty items. In 2015, after three years of development in partnership with the time-honored incense manufacturer Daiko, they introduced the innovative hibi incense, combining a matchstick lighting mechanism with traditional incense burning—a concept that has captivated both local and international consumers. Just in September 2023, Kobe Match Co. expanded its footprint by opening a hibi concept store in the Tokyo Kuramae area.

The revival of retro matchboxes by Kobe Match Co. entwines nostalgia with modern sensibility, offering a unique product that resonates with the past while fitting seamlessly into today’s lifestyle. Whether you’re a fan of hibi incense, a collector of vintage items, or someone who appreciates elegant design, this collection is sure to ignite your interest.
