First Student Teamsters Ratify New Nationwide Contract



In a major development for labor relations, Teamsters at First Student have ratified a robust five-year contract that dramatically enhances protections, benefits, and conditions for over 22,000 school bus workers across the United States. Announced on May 19, 2026, this agreement comes after a credible strike threat involving 96 local unions, reflecting a determined push for better terms in an industry fundamental to student safety and community operation.

Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien praised the commitment of union members, stating, "First Student Teamsters refused to settle for the status quo." Key Improvements of the New Agreement



The newly ratified contract introduces a series of important enhancements, including:

Director of the Teamsters Passenger Transportation Division, Matt Taibi, called the agreement a "powerful victory" that will greatly benefit the lives of the members involved. He noted that this contract not only reflects the commitment of Teamsters but also sets a higher standard for safety and working conditions in the transportation sector.

The Wider Impact on School Bus Workers



The agreement affects over 17,000 Teamsters and an additional 5,000 school bus workers throughout the nation. Amidst picketing by First Student Teamsters at various bus yards, the negotiating committee managed to finalize an agreement mere hours before the previous contract was set to expire on March 31.

Kelly Plaisted, a member of Teamsters Local 633 in New Hampshire and part of the negotiating committee, shared her relief and pride in the outcome, stating, "For a lot of us, this contract means less stress and more stability for our families. We love what we do and take a lot of pride in safely getting kids to school every day. This agreement gives us stronger protections and better conditions so we can continue to do that job the right way."
