Partnership Between RFU and Xcellerant Ventures to Boost Healthcare Startups in Chicago
New RFU-Xcellerant Ventures Partnership Aims to Advance Healthcare Innovation in Chicagoland
In a groundbreaking move aimed at bolstering healthcare innovation, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFU) has announced a new partnership with Xcellerant Ventures. This collaboration, signed through a memorandum of understanding with the Jetstream Venture Fund, is set to empower students, faculty, and researchers at RFU to transform innovative healthcare concepts into viable business ventures.
The partnership, formalized on October 23, is a visionary endeavor targeting the integration of scientific discovery with entrepreneurial education. It seeks to cultivate an ecosystem where scientific inventions can transition seamlessly from laboratory settings to practical applications that enhance patient care. Facilitated by support from the Jetstream Venture Fund, the program aims to provide essential resources, including venture readiness training, company formation guidance, and investor pitch preparation. These components are designed to equip stakeholders with the necessary tools to thrive in the increasingly complex healthcare landscape.
Dr. John Shufeldt, a graduate of Chicago Medical School at RFU, is a pivotal figure driving this collaboration. As a physician, attorney, and venture capitalist, he brings a wealth of experience in healthcare innovation, having founded several successful healthcare-related businesses. Dr. Shufeldt emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between academic research and real-world application. He notes, “Researchers are extraordinary at asking the right questions and generating breakthrough insights. But a discovery that stays in a journal or a lab notebook doesn’t help the patient at 3 a.m.” This sentiment underscores the value of combining scientific rigor with entrepreneurial agility to expedite the translation of discoveries into impactful solutions.
In addition to its focus on venture capital growth, the initiative will extend its reach to support companies within RFU's Helix 51 biomedical incubator. This incubator serves as a launching pad for startups looking to solve real-world healthcare challenges, thereby fostering innovation in the Chicago region—a hub known for its robust research institutions and burgeoning life sciences sector.
RFU President Aron Sousa, MD, expresses enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to enhance both educational offerings and healthcare delivery.
