An Insight into Huawei's Innovative Strategy Behind Foldable Smartphones

Huawei's Innovative Strategy in Foldable Smartphones

In the highly competitive world of technology, few brands exhibit the resilience and innovation of Huawei. Recognized by experts as a leading force in the tech industry, Huawei continues to push the boundaries, especially within the smart device sector, solidifying its dominance in the market for wearables and smartphones.

A Remarkable Leap in Market Share

Huawei's recent advancements in the foldable smartphone sector have placed it firmly among the top three brands globally. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Huawei saw a staggering 257% increase in shipments of foldable smartphones during the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year, capturing a market share of 35% and dethroning Samsung as the top foldable phone manufacturer.

A Five-Year Vision of Innovation

One of the key elements contributing to Huawei's success is its foresight in predicting that foldable screens would become the dominant trend in smartphone development. This vision can be traced back to about nine years ago when Li Xiaolong, Huawei's Chief Technical Officer, introduced the concept of a tri-fold smartphone, paving the way for the company's future innovations.

In early 2019, Huawei showcased its first iteration, the HUAWEI Mate X, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, setting a new standard for smartphone design. Fast forward five years, Huawei redefined its role in the industry with the launch of the HUAWEI Mate XT in China.

Bridging Visions with Reality

During the five years between its initial and final foldable product launches, Huawei has demonstrated a commitment to innovation, translating visions into tangible realities. Annually, the company invests over 10% of its revenue into research and development (R&D), with a total investment exceeding 1.11 trillion yuan over the past decade. Boston Consulting Group has recognized Huawei as the world's eighth most innovative company and fifth in the 2023 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard.

Huawei’s approach, focusing closely on each successive generation of foldables, has yielded significant advancements. The Mate X introduced flawless outward folding, while the Mate X2 perfected inward folding. The incredibly thin and lightweight Mate X3/5 models employed cutting-edge tri-fold technology, each iteration boasting groundbreaking features.

User-Centric Solutions

A significant contributor to Huawei's innovation is its user-centric approach. The company measures its motivations largely through feedback from consumers and their support. Among the most pressing concerns identified are durability of foldable screens, overall device sturdiness, and potential creasing from repeated folding. Tackling these common user experience challenges became paramount, leading to innovative solutions including the development of a drop-shaped hinge, an advanced hinge system, and the integration of Kunlun Glass.

Moreover, Huawei has excelled in maintaining a lightweight and slender design; the Mate XT has gained praise for its slim profile, matching the thickness of competitors' dual-fold smartphones.

Leading a Defining Trend

Recently, Huawei launched the new foldable Mate X6 in China, generating significant consumer interest post its brand ceremony. Reservations surpassed one million on Huawei's official online store by November 26, reflecting the anticipation and excitement around this product. Social media buzz also reiterated Huawei’s status as a
