Petrokimia Gresik Launches Bold Energy Transformation Program for 2024-2030 at COP29
Petrokimia Gresik's Energy Transformation Initiative for 2024-2030
In a significant move towards sustainability, Petrokimia Gresik, a subsidiary of Agroindustry Solutions under Pupuk Indonesia, announced its Energy Transformation Program at the COP29 International Forum, held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The initiative focuses on reducing carbon emissions and aligning with global decarbonization efforts, marking a critical step in addressing climate change challenges.
During his keynote address at COP29 on November 19, 2024, CEO Dwi Satriyo Annurogo outlined the company's commitment to embracing green technologies and practices. He emphasized that Petrokimia Gresik has intensified its decarbonization initiative, aligning with Indonesia's vision to become a leader in sustainable industry. This transformation reflects the government’s directive under President Prabowo Subianto to achieve national food security and reach net-zero emissions by 2060.
The Energy Transformation Program for the initial phase of 2024 includes a pivotal shift from coal to natural gas at its Phonska V facility, targeting significant emission reductions. Additionally, the company is ramping up the use of electric vehicles (EVs), having already integrated 180 electric motorcycles and eight electric cars, all fueled by specialized charging stations. The introduction of two electric forklifts and one electric wheel loader this year further demonstrates their commitment to innovation and emission reduction, with estimations suggesting a 22% decrease in emissions.
Looking towards the future, Petrokimia Gresik has laid out its Decarbonization Plan for the 2025-2030 period. This comprehensive strategy includes transitioning the fuel source for the Phonska IV furnace from coal to gas, utilizing gas for heating processes in the Sulfuric Acid II plant, co-firing with biomass, and developing hybrid facilities that produce green ammonia and soda ash. Such initiatives are designed to significantly lower emissions and align the company with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while ensuring compliance with emissions regulations.
Dwi Satriyo highlighted that the consistent decommissioning actions planned for 2025-2030 are projected to yield substantial outcomes, with an anticipated 31.89% reduction in emissions. Through these dedicated efforts, Petrokimia Gresik aims to meet its long-term vision by limiting carbon emissions to just 41,000 tons by the 2060 target date, far below the program's maximum allowable limit of 132,000 tons.
In conclusion, Petrokimia Gresik's bold energy transformation initiative not only seeks to mitigate climate impact but also establishes a blueprint for responsible industry practices in the face of a global environmental crisis. As companies worldwide look to minimize their carbon footprints, Petrokimia Gresik stands as a pivotal player in Indonesia's push for groundbreaking changes in agro-industry sustainability and environmental stewardship.
