Hammes Marks the Grand Opening of the New Sandra R. Berman Pavilion in Towson, Maryland
Hammes, a leading real estate consulting and development firm, is thrilled to celebrate the recent opening of the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion at the GBMC HealthCare facility in Towson, Maryland. This significant milestone follows the completion of construction in late 2024 and the phased opening that began earlier this year, allowing for a smooth transition for staff and services to the new facility.
The Sandra R. Berman Pavilion spans two stories and covers an impressive 70,000 square feet, designed specifically as a comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer center situated atop a four-story parking garage. The pavilion is now the central hub for the GBMC Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute, offering a wide array of outpatient cancer services. Key specialties include a comprehensive breast center, genetics, infusion therapies, gynecologic oncology, medical oncology, and essential oncology support services.
This state-of-the-art center features a modern infusion center equipped with both open bays and private rooms. In addition, patients can benefit from an integrative wellness center, a specialized oncology pharmacy, and a breast diagnostic imaging center, ensuring a holistic approach to cancer care.
In bringing this pavilion to fruition, Hammes provided a range of services including project management, operational readiness, and transition planning. The operational readiness team collaborated closely with clinical leaders at GBMC to devise effective operational plans, conduct staff orientations, and simulate real-life scenarios to ensure readiness for patient care in the new facility.
Rebecca Stover, the Director of Project Management at GBMC HealthCare, acknowledged the challenges posed during the move to the new pavilion, stating, “The detailed transition and activation planning led by Hammes ensured that the facility was not only ready but that we were operationally prepared due to thorough scheduling and an effective relocation strategy.”
Beyond the Berman Pavilion, Hammes was also instrumental in the recent unveiling of the Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building, a substantial 117,000-square-foot addition to the existing hospital that features a three-story atrium and two clinical floors. These projects are part of the larger GBMC "Promise Project," which aims to enhance the healthcare landscape in Maryland.
Throughout the process, Hammes has played a pivotal role in maintaining the program's timeline and budget. According to Russ Sadler, Senior Director of Planning, Construction and Design at GBMC, “From overseeing the design and construction with precision to leading the transition and activation phases, their meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence enabled us to deliver top-tier care from day one.”
“This has been a monumental effort from our team of project management professionals and clinical experts, who are dedicated to the success of these capital projects,” said Aimee Fogarty, Regional Vice President of Hammes Healthcare. “Working alongside GBMC has been an honor, and it’s rewarding to witness the positive impact these projects have on both staff and patients.”
