An Inspirational Journey of Awareness
In an incredible demonstration of resilience and advocacy, Dr. Judy Benjamin, an 82-year-old survivor of Alzheimer's, has completed a transformative 550-mile walk from Land's End to London. Her journey, which concluded on September 25, spanned several communities across southern England. Dr. Benjamin founded the Alzheimer's Survivors Foundation to share her experience and foster conversations about cognitive health and early intervention.
With every step she took—approximately 1.3 million—Dr. Benjamin aimed to inspire other families who have been affected by Alzheimer's and to reiterate the importance of talking openly about cognitive decline. Walking through towns such as Brighton and past iconic landmarks including the White Cliffs of Dover and Canterbury, she not only shared her story but also gathered accounts from others facing similar challenges.
"Reaching London means a lot to me, but it is the conversations I had along the way that I'll cherish most," Dr. Benjamin revealed. People engaging with her shared deeply personal stories relating to how Alzheimer's has impacted their loved ones, reinforcing her message of seeking help early.
Dr. Benjamin's personal battle with Alzheimer's began when she was diagnosed at 67. Witnessing the degenerative disease ravage her mother and several of her relatives motivated her to take drastic action against the cognitive decline. Guided by renowned neurologist Dr. Dale Bredesen, she adopted a customized regimen that addressed various factors contributing to her symptoms. Her dedication to mental wellness has reportedly resulted in significant cognitive improvements.
A meaningful stop for Dr. Benjamin during her walk was Canterbury, where she discovered she has familial roots tracing back to the 1600s. Visiting a church that holds records of her ancestral family’s milestones added a profound touch to her journey. At every stage of her walk, she also took time to connect with residents at care homes, sharing her recovery story and listening to the residents' experiences with the disease and caregiving.
This remarkable UK journey followed her previous expedition across the United States in 2025, where she walked approximately 2,870 miles from San Diego to St. Augustine. Although her UK based walk has officially concluded, Dr. Benjamin is determined to continue her advocacy work. She intends to keep raising awareness about brain health, helping families navigate discussions around cognitive decline and the essential need for early intervention.
