Corporate Insight's Comprehensive Analysis of Portfolio Construction Tools in Asset Management

Corporate Insight's Analysis of Asset Management Portfolio Tools

Corporate Insight (CI), a prominent name in competitive intelligence and customer experience research within the financial services sector, has recently released its comprehensive report entitled "Asset Management Monitor – Advisor". This report meticulously examines the portfolio construction and analysis tools offered by major players in the asset management industry.

Key Findings

The research indicated that as investment management continues to evolve, the need for advanced portfolio analysis tools has never been more essential for financial advisors. Sam Fritsch, CI's research manager, notes that these tools are crucial for streamlining portfolio management and enhancing financial planning processes. The report identifies the leaders in this competitive landscape and outlines best practices in tool development and functionality.

Among the report’s key findings, BlackRock and J.P. Morgan stood out, earning the only two "Excellent" ratings available for their portfolio analysis tools. BlackRock’s 360 Evaluator is highlighted for its user-friendly features that facilitate easy sharing with clients, alongside integrated tools that allow advisors to analyze expected returns effectively. J.P. Morgan's Portfolio Analysis tool, revered for its adaptability during the input phase, excels in producing customizable reports tailored to client needs.

The study also reveals that advisors prioritize robust input options, with preferences displayed towards tools that support manual data entry and client portfolio data uploads. Notably, J.P. Morgan is the only firm currently allowing advisors to include investment objectives, which enhances the personalized recommendations generated by the tools. This capability, deemed vital by many advisors in CI’s survey, presents an opportunity for other firms to improve their offerings and close the competitive gap in the industry.

Despite these advancements, there exists substantial variation in data visualization functions among firms. CI’s survey highlights that a striking 81% of advisors find interactive charts and graphics to be highly important. Firms like J.P. Morgan, Franklin Templeton, and Vanguard are acknowledged for providing a diverse array of data visualizations, which contribute to clearer insights and enhancements in client discussions.

Moreover, the ability to customize and save reports that cater to evolving client goals and market dynamics emerged as a key differentiator in the tools assessed. This feature addresses the need for advisors to adjust reports according to changing conditions and client expectations efficiently.

Fritsch emphasizes that tools that lag behind in functionality could rise to the forefront with strategic enhancements, particularly in improving data visualization and incorporating client investment objectives. By offering more user-friendly tools, advisors can better manage their workflows and deliver superior service as client needs continue to develop alongside market trends.

The full report covers tools from nine leading asset management firms, including American Funds, Fidelity, andpIMCO, providing a detailed overview of their offerings and functionalities.
