Collaborative Art Project 'A Tree' at GINZA SIX
Starting October 1, 2026, GINZA SIX will launch Phase 3 of the innovative art project titled 'A Tree', developed in collaboration with architectural firm DAIKEI MILLS. Over three years, this project promotes the celebration and utilization of Yoshino cedar from Nara Prefecture, exploring the cultural and communal significance behind craftsmanship and material selection.
Originally initiated in the spring of 2025, 'A Tree' aimed to delve into the essence of materiality by engaging with the background of Yoshino cedar, its production process, and the broader community it fosters. Phase 1 introduced furniture crafted from solid wood, while Phase 2 featured pieces created by six distinguished designers using a single log as their muse.
In this final phase, the designers will utilize leftover wood from their earlier projects to create small architectural spaces known as 'Yagura'. These structures will not only showcase artistry but will also act as gathering spots for community interaction and cultural exchange.
The event carries a deep-seated philosophy, as conveyed by DAIKEI MILLS representative, Keisuke Nakamura, who emphasizes that the project symbolizes how a single tree can cultivate connections and values within urban spaces. The presented pieces will transform over time with use, highlighting the evolving narrative of interaction and collaboration.
Featured Designers
- - Phase 3 will unveil the work of:
-
Siin Siin (Japan): Known for merging observational processes with the storytelling of wood's timeframe and forestry history, they aim to epitomize the richness of Yoshino cedar in their creations.
-
KUO DUO (South Korea): This studio is lauded for its refined aesthetics that explore materials. Their furniture series 'KIRI KABU', inspired by a stump found in Yoshino, enhances the beauty of tree rings and bark.
Subsequent groups of designers will join this initiative with their scheduled presentations:
- - Group 2 (Dec 3, 2026): Featuring artists like Rio Kobayashi (UK), who merges Japanese and European craft traditions into his innovative furniture, and Fabien Cappello (Mexico), who reimagines seating through communal experiences.
- - Group 3 (Feb 4, 2027): This group will present works that push the boundaries of material characteristics, including artists Max Lamb (UK) and Faye Toogood (UK), who tell ecological stories through their designs.
The project will evolve beyond the architectural installations as collaborations with other creators and shops are set to unfold in 2027, further enriching the interaction with the space and the community.
Event and Future Outlook
Earlier this year, the 'A Tree - TALKS' event saw designers discussing their experiences in Yoshino, detailing how their encounter with the forest inspired their works. This dialogue underscored the anticipation surrounding Phase 3, fostering deeper connections through architectural developments.
Those interested in the project can look forward to its unfolding impact and continual evolution within the vibrant hub of GINZA SIX. Visit the
