Japan's eSports Team Formation for the 20th Asian Games
The Japan eSports Association (JESU), led by President Hideki Hayakawa, has officially formed its national team for the upcoming 20th Asian Games, slated for 2026 in Aichi and Nagoya. This significant announcement comes as the eSports representatives participated in the TEAM JAPAN formation ceremony, showcasing a commitment to elevate Japan’s presence in this rapidly growing competitive arena.
The athletes selected to represent Japan were chosen after JESU recommended candidates who underwent the formal recognition process by the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC). This process culminated on July 15, when the final roster was officially announced. The formation ceremony took place in Tokyo on August 19, marking a pivotal moment for the eSports community in Japan.
In this edition of the Asian Games, eSports will be featured as an official medal sport across 11 events and 13 titles, which exceeds the previous iteration held in Hangzhou. Out of these events, the Japanese team will compete in 9 titles spanning 7 different gaming genres. The eSports competitions at the Aichi and Nagoya Asian Games are set to begin on September 23, 2026, inviting fans and supporters to witness the action live and back their team.
Tickets for the competitions are currently on sale, and those looking to support Japan's athletes are encouraged to visit JESU’s dedicated page for the event. Enthusiastic fans can learn all about the competition schedule and athlete details there as well.
To further engage and rally support for the 25 athletes aiming for medals, JESU has announced a social media campaign. Participants can don the special uniforms up for grabs by following JESU’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) and sharing designated posts. This engagement initiative aims to galvanize the community around the eSports national team and amplify the athletes' visibility.
