Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project Wins International Biodiversity Award
On June 4, 2025, the AI with Purpose Global Summit in Taipei came to a successful conclusion, celebrating achievements in AI technologies aimed at advancing sustainability. Jointly organized by Taiwan Mobile, the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA), this two-day summit gathered nearly 1,000 experts across various sectors including industry, government, and academia to deliberate on the substantial impacts of artificial intelligence in fostering sustainable practices and establishing a global action framework.
One of the most significant highlights of the event was the award ceremony for the 'Digital with Purpose' initiative, where Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean project took home the coveted International Biodiversity Award. This marks a momentous occasion as Taiwan Mobile has received this international recognition for the second consecutive time; last year, it was awarded for its MyCharge service in the Smart City category. This achievement underscores Taiwan's prominent role in harnessing AI technology for ecological conservation and sustainable practices.
The summit was kicked off by Tzi-cker Chiueh, Director General at Delta Research Center, who emphasized the critical balance between green electricity generation and AI-enhanced power consumption for sustainable development. Yi-Chin Lin, Deputy Minister of Digital Affairs, discussed building a global governance platform detailing Taiwan's five fundamental strategies to foster AI development—computing power, data sharing, talent cultivation, industry promotion, and capital investment.
What sets the award-winning AI Ocean project apart is its innovative melding of image recognition, generative AI-based chatbots, and active citizen participation. This synergy has resulted in the establishment of the first comprehensive knowledge base on marine species available in Traditional Chinese. Over 9,000 citizens contributed more than 19,000 images, enabling the AI system to accurately identify over 150 common marine species found around Taiwan.
Iris Liu, Vice President in charge of Branding and Public Relations at Taiwan Mobile and board member of GeSI, highlighted the significance of the AI Ocean project as a testament to Taiwan Mobile's commitment to the 'Digital with Purpose' movement, a concept they have championed since 2020. "This award represents not only technological innovation but also the importance of leveraging digital power for sustainable transformation," remarked Liu.
Luís Neves, CEO of GeSI, elaborated on the deeper significance of the Taiwan summit, underlining the 'AI with Purpose' philosophy. He stressed that this initiative is not about controlling the planet but rather a collaborative effort to build a peaceful and sustainable future for all, and confirmed GeSI's commitment to returning to Taipei next year.
Echoing this sentiment, Richard Lee, President of the TEEMA, asserted that AI must be leveraged as a force for social good and environmental sustainability. He reinforced Taiwan's dedication to developing sustainable AI practices and fostering global collaboration.
In conclusion, Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean project doesn't just exemplify technological advancements; it stands as a beacon of Taiwan's enduring commitment to ecological preservation, promoting intelligent usage of AI, and fostering community engagement in the protection of marine biodiversity. As the global community seeks solutions to pressing environmental challenges, Taiwan's proactive stance and recognition in these areas will undoubtedly inspire others to follow suit in the quest for sustainable innovation.
