EVLO Energy Storage Transforms California's Renewable Landscape with New Battery System

EVLO Energy Storage's Landmark Project in California

In a significant announcement, EVLO Energy Storage Inc. (EVLO) recently revealed the successful delivery of its first battery energy storage system to California, marking a transformative moment in the region's energy landscape. This project, with a robust capacity of 12 MW / 64 MWh, aims to enhance the region's grid reliability while facilitating greater solar energy integration. Scheduled for commissioning in the spring of 2025, this venture represents a crucial step toward achieving California's long-term carbon neutrality goals.

The battery energy storage system (BESS) project is designed to provide multiple grid benefits. These include enabling peak shaving—which helps to manage electricity demand during high usage periods—and offering ancillary services such as frequency and voltage regulation. EVLO was strategically chosen for its capacity to deliver a comprehensive and multi-functional BESS solution that maximizes value for both grid operators and stakeholders involved in the project.

This project will be managed through a cooperation with a Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) in Southern California. Notably, the scope of EVLO's work encompasses a complete range of services: from the initial design and engineering phases to procurement, production, delivery, and the eventual commissioning of the storage system. The BESS will consist of 64 EVLO 1000 energy storage units in conjunction with 16 power conversion system (PCS) units. This integrated approach signifies EVLO's commitment to offering holistic energy solutions that cater to the unique demands of the region.

To ensure robustness against California’s coastal environmental conditions, the components of the energy storage system have been specially adapted to resist corrosion and withstand the challenges posed by the area's salty and humid atmosphere. EVLO President and CEO, Sonia St-Arnaud, expressed pride in the company's ability to meet stringent safety and cybersecurity standards as set forth by their end customer. This successful deployment not only solidifies EVLO's presence from coast to coast in the U.S. but also underscores the company's unwavering commitment to delivering reliable and secure energy storage solutions.

As of now, California has surpassed the milestone of 13 GW of installed battery energy storage capacity, a crucial element in the state’s strategy to maintain grid reliability while striving to meet climate change objectives. The energy storage systems will play a pivotal role in California’s ambitious goal of reaching 52 GW of battery energy storage by 2045, thus supporting the overall transition to renewable energy.

In addition to this landmark project in California, EVLO has also made strides at the national level, having previously completed its first U.S. project in Troy, Vermont, in August 2024. Furthermore, EVLO is set to launch three more projects with Dominion Energy in Virginia, amounting to over 300 MWh, aimed for deployment in 2025 and 2026. Collectively, these initiatives illustrate EVLO's proactive role in advancing North America's clean energy landscape.

EVLO Energy Storage Inc., as a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, is dedicated to fostering a resilient energy future through the deployment of integrated energy storage systems. The company's utility-scale systems, combined with an extensive range of management services and software, ensure superior performance and safety, backed by over several decades of research and development. With its continuously growing portfolio and strategic partnerships, EVLO is poised to remain at the forefront of the evolving energy storage sector, contributing significantly to clean energy initiatives across North America.

As we move forward, the impact of EVLO's contributions to California's energy system will undoubtedly be felt as the state pushes onward in its efforts to create a sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure.
