ABB and e-Mobility Power Innovate EV Charging Systems



In a significant leap for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, ABB has announced the implementation of a special metering system for its ultra-fast chargers, which support charging rates of up to 150 kW. This initiative, developed in collaboration with e-Mobility Power, will allow billing based on actual electricity consumed (kWh) rather than time-based charging. This transition aims to enhance fairness in charging costs and promote sustainable charging infrastructure across Japan.

As of June 2026, ABB has successfully implemented this new metering system at 30 charging stations, primarily stationed at service areas (SA) and parking areas (PA) along highways. The e-Mobility Power network is recognized as one of Japan's largest public infrastructure services for EV owners, offering a comprehensive range of charging options from standard chargers to high-velocity units, making it easier than ever for travelers to charge their vehicles.

Established upon the principles of seamless access—“charging anywhere across Japan with one card”—the e-Mobility Power network has expanded rapidly since its inception in April 2021. This network boasts approximately 27,100 charging points connected as of March 2026, alleviating concerns around long-distance travel with electric vehicles.

Historically, charging costs were determined by the duration of use, disregarding variations due to outdoor temperature, state of charge (SoC), and the vehicle's charging capabilities. The shift to a usage-based billing system means that users will pay according to the actual electricity consumed during their charging session—providing a more transparent and fair charging model.

Aligning with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s guidelines on promoting charging infrastructure, which aim to establish a sustainable fee system based on energy consumption from FY2025, this initiative underscores ABB’s commitment to advancing the energy landscape in Japan. The introduction of the special metering systems by ABB supports e-Mobility Power’s transition to this new billing model, reflecting a significant step forward in improving EV charging standards and accessibility throughout the country.
