The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) is drawing attention to the initiation of the 2026 National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS), a key initiative launched by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). This survey is the only comprehensive source of data regarding recreational boating across the United States, covering all 50 states. Funded through the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, the NRBSS is vital for increased public awareness about boating safety. The current survey is carried out by NORC at the University of Chicago, a respected nonpartisan research institution with over 80 years of experience in data collection and analysis. Over the next year, NORC aims to reach out to more than 50,000 households across the nation, including the District of Columbia. Selected households may receive invitations through various means such as mail, email, or text message, encouraging their participation.

The NSBC is urging those who receive these invitations to contribute by participating in the survey. The responses collected will aid in forming policies and initiatives designed to improve boating safety, ensuring a secure experience for everyone who enjoys America's waterways. Importantly, all responses will remain confidential and will only be compiled into statistical summaries.

The NRBSS is a vital part of the National Recreational Boating Safety Program, coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard under the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971.
