Intercultural Dialogue Highlights Cultural Heritage Exchange Between Liangzhu and Samarkand

Understanding the Interconnections of Liangzhu and Samarkand

On July 6, an important intercultural dialogue event was held between the archaeological remains of Liangzhu, located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, and the historic city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. This meeting aimed to foster mutual learning and cultural exchanges between these two ancient civilizations.

Gathering of Cultures

Part of the program titled "Liangzhu and the World," this dialogue attracted over 100 participants from both China and Uzbekistan. The meeting provided a prestigious platform for discussing key issues such as heritage values, conservation strategies, and methods for revitalizing cultural legacies. Experts and delegates exchanged insights on various topics focusing on how these ancient cities, located on the ancient Silk Road, can enrich each other's cultural narratives.

Archaeological remains of Liangzhu, discovered in 1936 along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. This site is notable for its historical significance as a cultural intersection on the Silk Road. Similarly, Samarkand has been celebrated for its rich history and was also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

A Progressive Collaboration

This intercultural dialogue marked the first collaboration of the "Liangzhu and the World" program with another Asian World Heritage site. Discussions not only centered around the revitalization of heritage but also emphasized cooperative archaeological research between China and Uzbekistan, preservation of earthen sites, and the integration of digital technologies.

Participants presented models for coordinating heritage conservation and civilizational dialogue. To maximize the impact of their shared experiences, the Uzbek delegation visited the Liangzhu archaeological ruins and a corresponding World Heritage monitoring center. They observed how innovative technologies, such as AI-powered smart glasses, facilitate community engagement and promote heritage conservation in Liangzhu.

Farhod Nishonov, the Deputy Mayor of Samarkand, praised Liangzhu’s systematic conservation model, viewing it as a valuable experience for managing Samarkand's own heritage. He emphasized Samarkand’s commitment to draw upon these practices to enhance bilateral cultural exchanges and promote joint exhibitions, particularly emphasizing youth-targeted programs benefiting both cities.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Yang Xiaoping, Deputy Director of the Management Committee of Liangzhu, commented on the significance of this collaboration. He expressed hope that knowledge sharing would bolster efforts towards heritage conservation in both cities. This bidirectional exchange aims to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation among the people of each civilization and thus elevate the cultural ties between China and Uzbekistan.

As the "Liangzhu and the World" program continues to evolve, it seeks not only to share the successful strategies of Liangzhu’s heritage conservation but also to extract lessons from the rich cultural landscape of Central Asia. Ultimately, this dialogue signifies the beginning of a new era of international cultural collaboration, uniting the legacies of two exceptional civilizations on a path toward mutual growth and historic appreciation.
