LG and MediaTek Unveil a Groundbreaking Mobility Framework at Auto Shanghai 2025

The Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, known as Auto Shanghai 2025, has set the stage for a major breakthrough in vehicular technology as LG Electronics alongside MediaTek unveiled their remarkable Android-based Concurrent Multi-User (CMU) framework. The event took place from April 23 through May 2 and is recognized as one of Asia's most influential automotive exhibitions.

The CMU framework is touted as the world’s first implementation on Google's Android Automotive OS (AAOS), providing an unforgettable in-vehicle experience that allows multiple passengers to engage with various digital content simultaneously. As the demand for enriched in-car media consumption grows, this innovative solution comes to the forefront, making it highly relevant in the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) era, where screens are becoming larger and more varied.

A Unified In-Vehicle Experience

This pioneering framework enables every vehicle occupant to have personalized access to a unified Android system. In practical terms, this means that while the driver utilizes the navigation system, the front-seat passenger can stream videos, and rear-seat passengers can indulge in gaming – all occurring independently yet concurrently, in alignment with safety protocols.
Before the development of CMU, car interiors incorporated a traditional setup inclusive of Center Information Displays (CIDs) and Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) displays, which necessitated the use of multiple Android Virtual Machines (VMs). The introduction of CMU technology optimizes this design by running everything on a singular Android OS, substantially decreasing CPU, memory, and storage demands while lessening overall system load.

Crafting Personal Digital Spaces

With CMU, the in-vehicle experience is transformed into a cohesive digital environment where each user can create their own digital space. Each occupant can log into their dedicated display, link Bluetooth headphones or gaming inputs, adjust privacy settings, and even share media across multiple screens. Parents will find reassurance with parental controls that uphold age-appropriate content standards for children.
In addition to enhancing user experience, automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) will find that CMU’s efficient architecture allows for sophisticated and rich interfaces even on vehicles with less powerful CPUs, effectively reducing hardware costs.
The CMU framework was presented as an exciting new feature of AAOS15. In addition to AAOS's native functionalities, LG enhances the offering with exclusive capabilities such as compatibility with independent Bluetooth headsets, and functions like Text-To-Speech. Moreover, the company draws on years of optimizing Android mobile performance through its established mobile division. This integration of MediaTek's latest automotive system-on-chip into the CMU, announced in August 2024, adds extra processing strength, streamlining development further.

Eyes on the Future

Highlighting this new framework’s capabilities, Mike Chang from MediaTek stated, 'By showcasing the live CMU framework supported by the MediaTek Dimensity Auto Cockpit MT2718, we are spotlighting the future of in-vehicle experiences.' He emphasized that such solutions are built to meet stringent automotive-grade reliability standards, allowing OEMs to innovate with confidence.
Eun Seok-hyun of LG reaffirmed the company's commitment to transforming in-vehicle experiences through advanced technologies such as CMU, marking a significant leap toward realizing their mobility vision. He mentioned, 'We will continue our collaboration with industry leaders like MediaTek to create more integrated and intelligent solutions, effectively turning vehicles into mobile living spaces that provide unmatched connectivity, entertainment, and personalization.'
As the mobility landscape evolves, LG and MediaTek's partnership propels us closer to a new age of driving where vehicles are more than just transportation – they are interactive environments that elevate both connectivity and enjoyment on the road.
