In a significant development for financial literacy and innovation in the UAE, StockGro, India’s premier investment advisory and education platform, has recently organized the largest student hackathon in the region at BITS Pilani Dubai. This event brought together more than 180 students, forming 28 teams from various prestigious institutions, including Heriot-Watt University, NYU Abu Dhabi, and the University of Sharjah.
The purpose of the hackathon was not to focus solely on coding but to address real-world financial challenges faced by the region. Participants were tasked with developing scalable fintech solutions aimed at enhancing investor engagement, increasing financial awareness, and adapting StockGro products for the Arab market. According to Ajay Lakhotia, the CEO of StockGro, the goal was to immerse students in the fintech building process. "We wanted students to step into the shoes of fintech builders. The objective was to go beyond academic theory and experience firsthand the challenges of solving real-world problems in markets as dynamic as the UAE," Lakhotia explained.
Over the course of 48 hours, classrooms at BITS Pilani transformed into innovation war rooms, where student teams collaborated on their strategies and prototypes with the guidance of StockGro mentors specializing in product and technology.
Highlights from the Hackathon
The creativity displayed by the students was remarkable, with solutions inspired by the real financial dynamics of the UAE. Notable projects included:
- - Oil Price Monitor: A trading model that connects crude oil trends with stocks on the Dubai Financial Market and Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange.
- - No-Code Analysis Console: An intuitive drag-and-drop platform designed to streamline the creation of trading strategies.
- - Liquidity Tracker: A dashboard that monitors the activity levels of institutional versus retail investors.
- - AI Stock Picks: A predictive model that utilizes consumer-supplier trends to identify promising stock investments.
- - Credit Passport: A cross-border system for verifying credit data to facilitate investment.
Students from diverse fields, such as finance, technology, economics, and data analytics, collaborated to demonstrate how interdisciplinary cooperation fosters innovation.
Following pitches and demonstrations, StockGro leadership closely reviewed the top projects for future collaboration, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives for the UAE's financial sector. The event highlighted the region's burgeoning fintech landscape and acknowledged the growing number of retail investors who are becoming significant players in the market. As the UAE seeks to establish itself as the Middle East's fintech hub, programs like StockGro's hackathon bridge the gap by empowering students to create impactful, real-world solutions.
