Rosalind Franklin University Appoints James Carlson as New Provost to Transform Healthcare Education

Rosalind Franklin University Enhances Healthcare Education

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFU) has recently made waves by appointing James Carlson, PhD, PA-C, as its new provost. Carlson, previously serving as the interim provost since July 2025, steps into a pivotal role where he will lead the university’s expansive academic mission, which encompasses over 30 health and medical science degrees. His appointment comes at a time when the field of healthcare is evolving at an unprecedented pace, necessitating innovative approaches to education and practice.

Dr. Carlson brings a wealth of experience in interprofessional healthcare education and innovation to his new role. His vision is closely aligned with RFU’s mission to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals not just for the current landscape, but for a future where healthcare practices will continue to shift dynamically. “Our job at RFU is to prepare students for a career in the ever-changing landscapes of patient care and science,” emphasized Dr. Sousa, a colleague and fellow leader at RFU.

One of the focal points of Dr. Carlson's strategy is the integration of advanced technologies in health professions education. Under his leadership, RFU has recently unveiled a state-of-the-art simulation center, aimed at creating a realistic training environment for students. This innovative setting, known as the Virtual Health System, combines immersive technologies with clinical training, allowing students to engage with complex clinical situations and learn to collaborate effectively as teams.

Education in the healthcare sector must not only stay current with emerging technologies but also focus on the human aspects of care. Dr. Carlson highlighted the significance of team-based approaches in healthcare delivery, stating that “healthcare remains fundamentally human and increasingly team-based, requiring clinicians to communicate, exercise judgment, and work effectively across professions.” This assertion reinforces the resolve of RFU to maintain a comprehensive educational model where various health professions collaborate and learn from one another.

Throughout his career, Dr. Carlson has established environments conducive to interprofessional education, facilitating learning experiences that emulate the realities of clinical practice. He has played a crucial role in developing RFU's simulation-based education, particularly in the Gross Anatomy Lab, and has contributed significantly to the DeWitt C. Baldwin Institute for Interprofessional Education.

Dr. Carlson's extensive academic credentials include a PhD in Interprofessional Healthcare Studies from RFU, a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Practice, and an advanced Certification from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. His background positions him to effectively lead RFU in navigating the challenges and opportunities posed by new healthcare technologies and evolving educational methodologies.

Moreover, the current healthcare landscape is marked by rapid biomedical discoveries and innovative models of care that demand continuous adaptation from healthcare professionals. Dr. Carlson believes that graduates must be equipped to learn continuously, collaborate broadly, and utilize new technologies mindfully—all while keeping patients and families at the center of care.

In reflecting upon RFU’s commitment, Dr. Carlson stated, “Health professions education must prepare graduates not just for the healthcare system of today, but for the one that is still emerging.” This vision for forward-thinking education resonates deeply with RFU’s longstanding dedication to improving wellness through research and innovative education.

As Rosalind Franklin University embarks on this new chapter with Dr. Carlson at the helm, stakeholders and students alike anticipate transformational initiatives that will shape future healthcare practices and the education of healthcare professionals. RFU stands poised to lead the charge in healthcare education amid an era of unprecedented challenges and advancements, ensuring that its graduates are not just practitioners, but pioneers ready to embrace the full scope of future healthcare delivery.
