Step Inside Do Ho Suh's World: The Genesis Exhibition at Tate Modern
The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh - Walk the House
Tate Modern and Genesis have collaborated to present an extraordinary exhibition titled The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh - Walk the House, which opens on May 1, 2025, and runs until October 19, 2025. This exhibition not only marks the first major solo showing of Seoul-born artist Do Ho Suh in London for a generation, but it also represents the inaugural project of Genesis Art Initiatives in Europe.
A Journey Through Space and Memory
Do Ho Suh's artwork has deeply engaged with themes of space, memory, and identity over the past thirty years. His creations invite audiences to examine their relationship with physical spaces and the memories connected to them. Through large-scale installations, sculptures, videos, and drawings, he unravels the complexities of how individuals navigate and inhabit their surroundings.
The term Walk the House draws inspiration from the hanok, a traditional Korean architectural style known for its potential to be disassembled and reassembled at different locations, akin to the experience of 'walking the house.' This concept permeates the exhibition, showcasing Suh's works from Seoul, New York, and London, the three cities he has called home.
Engaging Installations and New Works
Exhibition attendees will have the opportunity to walk through 11 translucent fabric replicas of spaces that have played significant roles in Suh's life. Notably, the exhibition features new installations, including Nest/s (2024) and Perfect Home London, Horsham, New York, Berlin, Providence, Seoul (2024). These immersive experiences include other newly created pieces displayed for the first time, allowing visitors to connect personally with Suh’s artistic vision.
Suh’s exploration of personal and collective memory is evident in pieces such as Rubbing/Loving Seoul Home (2013-22), which involved painstakingly rubbing the surfaces of buildings with colored pencils, and Rubbing/Loving Project Company Housing of Gwangju Theater (2012). At the entrance to the exhibition, visitors will encounter Who Am We? (2000), a wallpaper composed of tiny photographic portraits gathered from various sources, echoing the artist's ongoing inquiry into individual and collective identities.
Artistic Dialogues Through Various Mediums
Besides the fabric installations, the exhibition also includes Suh's delicate thread drawings and extensive works on paper. Two video installations — Robin Hood Gardens (2018) and Dong In Apartments (2022) — further delve into the dialogue between architecture and the concept of home, prompting reflection on what makes a space truly feel like one’s own.
In a dedicated area of the exhibition, the Bridge Project unfolds Suh’s ongoing exploration into the idea of a ‘perfect home,’ developed in collaboration with professionals from architecture, engineering, anthropology, and biology. This project culminates the exhibition, offering a thought-provoking conclusion to the visitor's journey.
