Ontario International Airport Surges Past 4 Million Passengers

Ontario International Airport (ONT), a key aviation hub in Southern California, has achieved a new milestone in passenger volume, surpassing four million travelers during the first seven months of 2026. In July alone, the airport recorded 673,413 air travelers, demonstrating a resilient rebound in air travel despite global challenges.

The year-to-date totals reveal a slight decline from last year’s figures, with 616,247 domestic passengers and 57,166 international travelers marking a modest increase of 0.4% in the international category. The cumulative total of 4,085,992 passengers through July indicates a growth of 1.3% compared to the same timeframe in 2025. Notably, international travel surged dramatically by 36.9%, reflecting ongoing confidence in the airport as a travel destination and gateway to the United States.

Atif Elkadi, the CEO of Ontario International Airport Authority, attributed this growth to the airport's strategic market significance and the determination of airline partners to expand services in the region. "The substantial rise in international travelers amidst the broader global constraints underscores the strength and resilience of our airport and the market we serve," Elkadi stated, highlighting ONT's emerging role as a vital aviation gateway in Southern California.

In July 2026, South West Airlines led the passenger share with 34.4%, followed by American Airlines at 14.8%, and Frontier Airlines capturing 11.9%. Although overall passenger numbers showed a small year-on-year decline from July 2025, the growth in international travel is particularly encouraging as it indicates a resurgence in foreign interest.

In addition to passenger growth, ONT is solidifying its status as a logistical powerhouse in the region, evidenced by a 7% increase in air cargo volumes year-to-date. The airport processed 75,222 tons of cargo in July 2026 – a 3.5% increase from the previous year. Notably, freight saw a 3.5% rise, while a slight drop was observed in mail volumes owing to changes in trade patterns.
