Sustainable Resource Circulation System Initiated at Toyo Gakuen University
Toyo Gakuen University, located in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, has partnered with Corelex Shinei, a company based in Fujishi, Shizuoka, to launch a new paper recycling system known as "Paper対応" (Paper Support). This innovative system is designed to recycle the excess paper generated on campus into essential products like toilet paper.
Committing to Full Resource Circulation
The university has consistently emphasized its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its educational activities and campus operations. Being an academic institution, Toyo Gakuen sees a significant amount of paper used daily for classroom materials, research data, and student reports. Formerly, this paper was discarded as waste, but the university aims to transform it into a valuable resource through its partnership with Corelex Shinei, which possesses unique paper recycling technology.
The newly introduced "Paper対応" will see the collection and dissolution of paper resources generated within the university by Corelex Shinei, which will then recycle this paper into essential items like toilet paper. The company's specialized dissolution technology allows for the processing of paper even when they have staples, clips, or binders attached—materials that are typically challenging to recycle. This system requires no pre-sorting and is environmentally friendly since the paper is dissolved using warm water, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional incineration methods.
Currently, the university is in the initial phase of collecting and recycling paper resources. Plans are underway to introduce toilet paper manufactured from recycled paper sourced from the university's waste into the restrooms on campus.
Cultivating Increased Environmental Awareness
By experiencing the cycle of their own waste being transformed back into products, students and faculty will be encouraged to develop a heightened awareness and change their behaviors regarding environmental issues. This initiative not only aims to minimize waste but also serves as a practical educational opportunity, embedding sustainability into the daily life of the campus.
